So you're going along your merry way in the middle of the day, and someone in a truck had their headlights blaring in the rear view mirror. In the old days you would just flip the lever to go to night mode and dim it. Alas, there isn't a lever there now.

Take your hand and feel the back of your mirror. You will find a depressed place on the driver's side. This is a light sensor. This sensor makes the mirror stay bright during the day.

If you cover this sensor (it may take a few seconds) then the mirror will dim.

For me, I keep an air freshener -- one that hangs from mirror with elastic string -- in the car for just this purpose. Put the air freshener over the light sensor and the elastic string around the mirror to hold it in place. Mirror dims until removed. It takes a little practice to hit the sensor and to be able to put covering over it quickly. But once learned, it can make a commute much more enjoyable!
