The other day my wife took the Kona to work. I was out in the driveway when she left and noticed the VESS was much quieter outside the car than when sitting inside. I would love to find a way to reduce or insulate the interior from that droning sound.
The VESS can be made optional ( as equipped on European models). https://insideevsforum.com/community/index.php?threads/modifications-and-tweaks.5009/page-8#post-105992 This could save you a lot of labor and materials trying to insulate as others have done (if the goal is to minimize the VESS sound) https://insideevsforum.com/community/index.php?threads/i-added-sound-insulation-to-my-kona-electric.9567/
Thanks for those two links! Interesting ideas but I think any tampering with the VESS may have insurance liabilities if in accident. Not sure if they are required by law in my state or nationally.
You may want to try this. #190. It made a noticeable difference on mine. Maybe something to consider first before doing the insulation for other parts of the car. Modifications and Tweaks | Page 10 | Inside EVS Forum
The VESS speaker is aimed directly at the inside closed face of the front bumper. It's relying on sound going out the edges but clearly some will reflect back to the cabin. Personally and perhaps because I'm a bit deaf, I don't think it's louder insider but I agree with EE that a pushbutton is the magic fix. Because it defaults to "on" at every start I don't see why it would raise any legal issues, especially if the noisemaker was not required to be present on the date of sale.
