  2. Just a note. Please try to keep any conversation around the political figures involved to a minimum and polite as possible. I understand we all have strong feelings about some personalities involved, but let's not let that distract us from the core issue.

    Thanks!

I will say that I'm in agreement with David here. I'm not sure what we can do about it besides call our elected representatives and vote against supporters of this in November, but I'm certainly open to suggestions.

  4. Aside from the administration, I'm pissed at the automakers who pushed for this. It certainly doesn't make me want to by a car from any of them. If I could afford to buy a new car, at least. :)

I suspect that if they don't regret it now, they will regret it later if they stop/slow working on improving efficiency. Administrations change and Americans would prefer to breath clean air, and so the standards will get tougher again. If OEMs are caught sleeping, there are plenty of European and Chinese customers ready to take over significant portions of their market share.

I am not sure what goes on behind closed doors with lobbyists, but every company has to try to defend their profit stream... Lets be clear because I hang out with C level executives all the time, and they do not get paid to be environmental do gooders, they are paid to get results for the shareholders. I try to separate my personal passion for environmental responsibility from judgement of others business, I am not a hypocrite. GM may have something to do with this lobbying, but the are also rolling out solar and wind energy to all of their factories, and landfill free at most of them, so its not like they are turning their back on the environment.

Well David glad you're so charitable. This is very much like the Brits telling people that even their own salt is on their beach for the taking they they must instead buy it from Brits for high prices or in twisted version of it something about high price Brit Tea Boston. In the case of petrol its part slavery and part rent seeking (fine distinction) and part poisoning. And as for your C suit criminals, that is what they are, they can get confused about ethics and what their actual obligations are but hopefully we have laws that allow us to imprison them (hopefully some how retroactively.) The profit is not excuse its a huge aggravation it is what should taking something that is civil and turn it criminal. They have obligation not to poison people first and foremost.

Dominick the admins may change very quickly and be laggard firms subject to claw back. Kind of thinking about the way the German government went after Tesla (wrongly,) retroactively. Think that should happen with the petrol just attache profits retroactively for externalities. That is what is happening in the mushrooming suits. Again this is what General Kelly was talking about when he said with compromise (a right to exploit people or treat them like property) the civil war could have been avoided. This as an attempt to roll back the civil war to reinstate slavery (because the wealthy can't justify their status anymore- never really could, never will again) and roll back civil rights. This is just like with health care the Republicans wanted to make payment mandatory so they could pretend to rail against it, what they really wanted was a way for health insurance to keep rent seeking on patience in a pass through to petrol industry losses. Need a conspiracy (?) its called petrol.

Let's just remember that while posting a rant about politics to our favorite social media platforms may feel good, it's not going to change the minds or the actions of our elected representatives. Call or e-mail your congresscritter and your senator, and let him or her know what you think.

But do us all a favor, and make your call or your email polite. You can express your opinion firmly while still remaining calm and civil. Angry or hostile calls and letters won't be passed along to your elected representative. If you want to make an angry protest, then join one of the groups that visit the offices of those congresscritters and senators to do so in person, and get more media coverage that way. You can network through your local Indivisible organization.
