I have been doing something similar in all weather conditions. If my trip will exceed the electric range anyway why be stingy with ICE activation except near the end of the trip when it is preferable to use up the last of the EV range to avoid a little unnecessary ICE use. Long trips where the ICE will be needed anyway are great opportunities to experiment with different modes and driving styles.
