Has software update reduced your Kona Electric range?

  1. It doesn't have anything to do with charge cycles but with how efficiently you're driving.

I had about 310 until a few days ago when I had to drive to LA and back going 75mph on the highways back and forth. Now it predicts about 260 miles. Slowly increasing as I'm driving only locally again.

    This is completely normal!

  3. Actually here is a twist on more range after the software update.
I haven't been too happy with the way the software charges the 12V battery even after the update, it definitely charges more often and at unpredictable times, however measuring the 12 V level yesterday morning it was down to 12.05 V:(
So I did my usual thing of leaving it in run mode for about 3 hours which brought back to 12.6 V, but my indicated range went down by 8 kms. Probably from sitting in run mode and not getting any kms driven.
Next month I will try utility mode and see if that makes any difference, if not then its back to the old standby - my Motomaster manual battery charger.

My car had the BMS update 2 weeks ago, and ended up back in the shop the day after. Basically the car won't charge - it throws faults if you try. The tech at the dealer said I probably need a new battery. But Hyundai needs to order it - the dealer does not have that ability. No ETA on when I get it back. No ETA on anything, really.

  5. The software update didn't change my range....driving style (lead foot or poking along), climate controls (A/C Heat and windows open), and environmental changes (Air temp, rain snow...) all change the GOM calculations. I charged from 20% to 100% and got 369 miles of range on the GOM.

I'm lucky as so far, I have had no issues with my 12 Volt battery.... but it may be related with big changes in temperature in areas that have big temperature differences between summer and winter. Around here, it's hot for most of the year... Warm in Winter and hot in Summer..

Indeed.. I get a huge fluctuation between my range after a road trip compared to driving a few hundred miles around town... I have been as low as 216 miles range at 80% after a high speed road trip.. However, after 1 - 2 weeks of city driving, my 80% range is usually somewhere around 250 - 260 miles.. 100% range is over 300 most of the time but I rarely charge to 100%... In 14 months, I charged maybe 8 to 9 times to 100%

I reported previously after the BMS update that I got 310 miles on a 100% (starting from 37% SOC) Charge shortly after the update. Last night I charged to 100% again (starting from 33% SOC) for an long planned trip but THIS time it only max'd to 299 miles .. So frankly, in my case, the BMS update didn't seem to change anything, unlike my earlier suspicions. I know it's only 11 miles, but still. :-(

I don't get why this is significant to you. The reported range is not a measure of anything other than the estimated distance to empty, i.e. it is not a measure of efficiency or battery capacity (though these are of course parameters). Your car now is performing exactly as it was before.

  11. You will live longer and be happier if you ignore the GoM!

Same discussion ad nauseam on the Tesla threads. I keep my TM3 display in %SOC and treat it like a gas gauge.

I told my wife to ignore the GoM and just look at the “fuel” gauge.

  14. ......Oh and don't forget tire pressure! I keep them at 40-45psi cold. On highway trips they go up to about 47psi, they are rated for 51psi cold.

On Friday, September 18, 2020, I charged my car for the 2nd time after the Dealer Installed the Battery Update. The mileage increased from 303 Miles (on August 27th) to 309 Miles. Again, only a slight increase. Some of you have had increases of 50 or 60 miles. (1) How many more times do you think I will have to charge the car to get back up to my original 325 Mile Range? (2) Does anyone know if there is any way for the Dealer to adjust the Battery Controller to increase the Mileage? Thanks

  16. The mileage displayed depends on how you've driven over the last x miles or x time. Nobody knows exactly how it's calculated.

So an increase or decrease of a few miles like you are reporting (5-20 miles) doesn't mean anything other than that you are not driving in a laboratory.

A difference of 5 miles as you are reporting is totally normal and doesn't indicate any changes in battery or anything else.

I myself have a vastly changing range from 240-350 miles depending on if I hit the highway or only drive local 10 minute drives. Or which route I am taking in town.

Last Saturday, October 10th, I charged my Car for the 3rd time since the Battery Update. Mileage increased to 315 Miles. So it is slowly increasing with each charge. So to recap after I was getting Consistent 325 miles per charge for 6 months, the battery was updated by the dealer. Since then my mileage was 298 when picked up from the dealer and my charges at home with Chargepoint 40 Amp Charger, after I got the car back from the dealer, were, 303, 309, and now 315. Not what I was hoping for, but at least it is slowing increasing.

  18. Any one of which is totally acceptable (and above the EPA 258 mile range) for the Kona EV. Now that the range estimator has more information to work with, it should eventually match what you had previous to the update given the same conditions.:)

  19. I had the update performed today. The work order says in part "confirmed high voltage battery isolation @1000 ohms and battery cell voltages within 0.1V deviation. Performed BMS, MCU, VCU/LDC and IGPM upgrages. Cleared incidental DTC..." Most of that is Greek to me. The 'battery saver plus' option has disappeared from the display menu. My state of charge did not change but the GoM dropped from 264 km to 208 km range left.

The update resets your driving history and sets the GoM back to factory default.. As you create new driving history, the GoM will change and get back to where it was originally, probably within 1000 miles of driving..

Well I finally needed to charge my car again. I did it Friday November 6th. The last time before this was October 10th. I let the battery run all the way down to 5% and I got 321 Miles on my Friday charge. So, slowly getting back to my original goal of 325 which is where it was at before the Hyundai battery update.

Glad to have found this thread.

I had the battery update. Now my aux battery keeps dying. I tried finding Battery Saver + thinking that might have gotten turned off with the battery update but could not find it. So as I understand, it disapperred with the Battery update, is that correct? Wonder why?

I also never see the green light on the front indicating the battery saver is working even when my aux battery is almost dead. Anyone else had this problem?

Called the dealer but of course no call back so great to have a source of information here.

    Any info, greatly appreciated
    Hans
