Our 2019 Kona is getting a new GRU at 18,000 miles. Will the replacement be the same as the original -- that is, will it be subject to the same WoF issues? Or have they made improvements? Obviously, if it is the same as the original, I will replace the magnets and oil very quickly. If it is a new/improved model, should I be doing the same? Anything else I should be doing or be aware of?
I've been following a couple of owners recently who have had the GRU replaced and changed the oil early on the new one as a precaution, the last one was a week ago on a Niro at 265 miles after replacement, another mid-June at 1800 km on a Kona here in NZ. In both cases the oil was described as not looking too bad, photos below. But this step removes particles that would otherwise be left in circulation damaging the bearings. So, there's been no sign unfortunately that Hyundai have recognised and fixed the issue and first-time noise reports continue to appear about every 2-3 weeks in the major forums. If you can add magnetic plugs (or at least magnets on the existing plugs) all the better. There's nothing else to be concerned about.
I had my gearbox replaced due to the WOF tick tick at low speeds early on. But shortly after the sound came back. Then they also replaced the motor (different part number) and that fixed it for good as the sound never came back. Apparently the motor comes with stronger clamping to the gearbox and that does the trick. So both need to be replaced to be fixed for good. When just the gearbox was replaced they found fretting on the flange mating surfaces incl some metal shavings. So there was obviously an issue with the gearbox and motor clamping.
