Use the menu button on the steering wheel left side to select it and display it below the speedometer.

Thanks. We've done very little HV driving since we got the car in June. Will have to check that out the next time we do.

This whole thread sums up why the Clarity is the best car I have ever owned. I get dependable, comfortable (dare I say close to luxurious), affordable personal transportation that’s good for my wallet and the environment at the same time. It’s a win-win.

It’s almost too good to be true and truly is the best of both worlds until the BEV/infrastructure matures.

Glad I started this nice discussion. I understand better now how some folks see a meaning in mpg with combined electric use.
I concur the best way to state this is " I drove10,000 miles last year and only used 48.7 gallons of gas!

And it is a great car.
But lousy dealers, a friend was interested in buying one while I was in Europe and unable to assist, and the Hartford CT dealer told him "they are no longer eligible for the $7500 federal rebate. Why don't you buy this nice Insight instead."

I showed him the government site showing its still eligible after he bought the Insight.

Why do dealers do this? Are they just so used to lying they can't help doing it constantly? Do they net more profit on the Insight?

All right I and others hijacked your original thread to discuss what mpg means on PHEVs. No reason to get testy young whippersnapper, all discussion is good on this board

“Testy?” Is that something the elderly say Towle? There’s a quote from a young persons film called something like “Casablanca” that goes something like this... if I gave you any thought Towle... I’d probably dislike you.

Back to the original topic and completely a moot point but 6 months in I’m between 0.1 and 0.2 l/100km according to trip B over 10k km which was never reset... let’s call it 0.15 so that’s 1568mpg??

I’m an edge case though, daily commute is almost exactly 70km and I fly when I travel so no real road trips. But this really highlights the perfect nature of a phev. As to why I didn’t get a BEV, rear passenger space and cost.

You’re not elderly as long as you’ve still got some whipper left in your snapper!

That's a long commute, how many miles do you have on your car?

OT, instead of discussing the right way to calculate MPG, how about saying your cost per mile in EV mode and gasoline. That way, people will know what your true costs are.

I think you have hit the nail right on the head. In discussions like this people are usually thinking either of cost, or the environment. Yes I know many people have an interest in both, but when speaking numerically it has to be clear what the viewpoint is at that moment. MPG is really an environmental measurement. Being able to say "In my last 1,000 miles of driving I only used five gallons of gas" is not a trivial statement, but it is purely an environmental statement not a cost statement. MPG is perfectly fine in that context, as long as it is clear to the listener that you are not saying anything about cost. However when talking economics then the measurement should always be stated in cost per mile. Just stating mpg when cost is the focus or at least a part of the focus of the discussion doesn't really have any meaning.

I think we are just so trained to using mpg as a measurement for either viewpoint, that it takes a while to get used to the fact that in a PHEV mpg (or l/ 100 km) has a very different meaning.
