Is there a way to reverse the order, to display the most recent comments first?

I am very pro EV and eagerly follow the monthly sales reports, but I would like to see BEV and PHEV sales seperated and shown as a percentage of overall vehicle sales. Right now this is not so critical, but I like to play the game of future guessing so I created a little graph. BEVSales.png
As you can see, I believe PHEVs will have a short life as people get comfortable with plugging in at night and all dedicated parking spots become equipped with at least low level charging. Landlords will find that not having EV charging at their parking spots will mean difficult to rent apartments, they will quickly learn to add this feature. PHEVs are a transitional design, and will be abandoned as quickly as possible by users realizing that paying for and carrying around two distinct power systems is very inefficient.

If my representation is correct, it will be 2025 before reporting and tracking BEVs and PHEVs separately becomes an issue, but I think all articles projecting future sales should be done this way.

  3. I brought this up with our report chart maker. He's just recently taken over the task and will be making some changes over time. Hopefully disentangling the BEVs from the PHEVs will be one of them.

Regarding changing the order of posts, I don't believe that is possible, but have asked our technical team in case they know something about it that I don't. Will update once I find out.

Unless and until things change, as a workaround you can click on the "Go to First Unread" button near the top of a page.

Why no Model 3 sales data for December?

  6. It's coming today. Or at least, the 4Q numbers are coming today. Hopefully by 5:00 est. Then, I need to write a quick post.

I'm rather gobsmacked. In the past, InsideEVs has always posted their estimate of Tesla production before Tesla issued its quarterly report.

So is the lack of "official" InsideEVs estimate for the Tesla Model 3 production for December, an indication that Tesla has successfully imposed an info blackout regarding TM3 production, or is it an indication that (editor in chief) Jay Cole is on vacation... or maybe some of both?

Inquiring minds want to know! ;)

  9. Jay's around, but I don't think he compiled the numbers this month. Not sure why Tesla monthly estimate procedure has changed off the top of my head, but I never could figure out how they divined those numbers before. I should probably ask.

    Hi Domenick

If there any plan to add FCEVs to the monthly sales chart? They are EVs and should be included for monitoring purposes. Any idea how to make this happen?
    Thanks

  11. I spoke to our numbers guy, and they said they've always stuck to the "it has to have a plug" rule. We do, though, include the Toyota Mirai in our sales chart for comparison's sake. If they begin to gain more in popularity, they'll probably be included.

In the meantime, this site does some tracking.

  13. Just to update, The Honda Clarity FCX was recalled in October and is still awaiting a software fix before sales can restart, so there haven't been any for the past couple of months.

Also, contrary to what I said to @Donn in email, there was actually a single Hyundai Tucson fuel cell vehicle sold in December, not zero.

Hyundai sold more Ioniq BEV in Canada than the US. Hyundai has serious dealership problems in the US. Unless they solve their dealership problems, their sales will continue to decline.

I decided to try producing a more accurate graph by using data from the Monthly Reports. Ended up having to double the time scale :(

Hi Domenick, What do you know about KANDI EVs? I searched articles here, but they were very old. Are they the juggernaut they were supposed to become as described from these old articles? On KANDI's Site, I see they are still in operation and have new models out, including an SUV. Might you please include them in the graph you have? Also, a neighbor told me yesterday that the RAV4 dual fuel car is now available. It sounds like a vehicle I would be very interested in buying. Maybe that RAV model, could also be on the graph. We currently have a 2015 white Chevy Volt that we LOVE.
Thank you for all the work you do here. It's very much appreciated.

  17. Kandi is a bit of an odd case. It was super hyped by certain short-TSLA traders a few years back, so I've always looked at it suspiciously. It announced a few deals -- 20,000 cars for a local government, for instance -- but if you look at its production, it's extremely disappointing. In 2016, the last year I can find numbers for, they sold 11,546 units of 3 different models, the K10, K12, and K17. That's down from the 16,376 units sold in 2015.

It seems the company is strongly affected by clumsy government interventions in the market. But, considering the size of the market and the affordability of the car, I am pretty underwhelmed. They use a battery swap system, which could have something to do with the seeming lack of enthusiasm, though I don't don't if it's the economics or inconvenience that's the specific problem. They did just buy a company that specializes in battery-swapping machinery, so maybe it'll improve.

Battery swapping is controversial, having failed in spectacular fashion in the Better Place fiasco, and not seen as desired by customers according to Tesla, whose batteries were also designed to be swapped. Still, Gogoro, the scooter company uses this model and appear to be having some success. Hard to say how well scooter battery swapping in Taiwan and sub-compact car battery swapping in China correlate, though.

Anyway, as to including them on the graph, that's handled by other InsideEVs staff, but I expect they would wait until they have product in Western markets before including them.

As for the Toyota Rav4, they only offer them as traditional internal combustion and hybrid versions. The hybrid is only rated 34/30 mpg, so ok, but not great. Depending on your usage pattern, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV might be a better fit, but without knowing a host of variables, I can't say it would be better for your situation.

This is a US listing of plug-in cars. There are many Chinese cars not listed here, maybe they will be imported later. The RAV4 is not a plug-in.

  19. January 2018 numbers are interesting.
Chevy Bolt sales are down from 3,227 in December to 1,177 units. The Chevy Volt, with more competition in its space, is down from 1,937 in December to 713 units.
The Honda Clarity sold 898 units in December. The January number dipped to 594.

Prius Prime found 1,496 new homes after a 2,430 December.
Ford Fusion Energi 640, down from 875.
Nissan LEAF down to a shockingly low 150 units, but was actually up from 102 in December
375 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids, down from 720
The newly arrived moved 300 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, up first 99 reported sales in December.

January is a slow month anyway, but I expect to see huge improvements in the Nissan LEAF numbers now that the 2018 model is shipping.

Right. The InsideEVs "Monthly Plug-in Sales Scorecard" reports show only U.S. sales, so Kandi cars won't appear on it if they're not sold in the USA.

You note elsewhere that manufacturers/reps. intend to stop releasing plug-in sales figures separately, and to lump them in with non-plug-in sales. Have you any idea why this policy has been adopted? It will make compiling figures here difficult I imagine. Hopefully, you have a workaround?

  23. I usually tend to believe things like this happen for the simple reason that it makes someone's job easier. Though, it's also possibile some would like to cloak figures on model variants.

When they do this, we contact the manufacture and hope they'll break it down for us. I don't compile the numbers, so I can't say how well that works in practice.
