Time for a little update. It appears the guy that deposed Ghosn actually approved $40 million and payment and use of properties. Crazy! https://www.ft.com/content/220dad60-4ecf-11e9-b401-8d9ef1626294
Makes a mockery of Nissan's claim that the corporate housing they acquired was done without their knowledge. When Hiroto clearly knew about it in 2012. For those blocked by the FT paywall. https://www.irishtimes.com/business/manufacturing/nissan-chief-approved-40m-retirement-payment-for-carlos-ghosn-1.3837913
Thanks for the link, Gooki. Strange to see how thoroughly this case is unraveling. I guess the Nissan board thought that Ghosn would cave in to the usual "enhanced interrogation" treatment that the Japanese give to those arrested, and that there wouldn't be any close examination of their trumped-up charges. At least, based solely on the articles that have been linked to this thread, it doesn't seem that a reasonable person would believe the charges would hold up to scrutiny. Of course, all I know is what I've read in these reports. I know from personal experience that what is reported by newsies is often wrong, or at least biased and/or incomplete.
Nissan committee recommends dissolving chairman position. Sounds like Nissan is attempting to reduce Renault's control on the company, as the chairman role is one of the positions Renault can directly appoint. https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Nissan-s-Ghosn-crisis/Nissan-report-urges-scrapping-all-powerful-chairman-role Renault is playing it cool for now. The up coming shareholders meeting will tell us if Renault is truly happy or if they'll attempt to take control of Nissan.
Renault is also seeking to merge with Nissan and FCA, which would give it a lot more scale. This move could be tied to that.
I don't know how much he will tweet, but this is his account: https://twitter.com/carlosghosn (also, jealous he could arrange for a blue check on launch.)
Rearrested again. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/ex-nissan-boss-carlos-ghosn-arrested-for-fourth-time-nhk/ar-BBVAMdx?li=BBnbfcL
OMG. Isn't it possible to sue for malicious prosecution in Japan? (I'm guessing the answer is not only "No", but "Hell no!") My heart goes out to Carlos Ghosn and his family. :'(
やばい!!!! I guess they didn't like the idea of him holding a press conference. This sort of behavior by the authorities makes Japan look pretty bad, in my opinion.
Ghosn publicly requests support from French government. https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Nissan-s-Ghosn-crisis/Ghosn-calls-on-France-to-intervene-saying-he-is-trapped It also looks like Ghosn may have prerecorded his April 11 announcement.
I clicked the link and got the message, "SOMETHING WENT WRONG We are sorry for any inconvenience and are working hard to solve the problem. Please try again soon." Hmmm. (probably nothing) In any case, the AP has a good version of the story. Apparently, he gave an interview to a French outlet -- TF1 television -- in which he predicted his rearrest and also said, “I am calling on the French government to defend me and preserve my rights” p.s. Asian Review link in previous post now works for me.
Ok, the key sentence from Asian Review article indicating he may have prerecorded his public statement about the situation: "Ghosn recorded another video before his arrest, said Junichiro Hironaka, who leads the former auto executive's defense team. Hironaka did not say when that video would be released."
