I always leave ECON on. What I've found is that if the battery is fully charged and you initiate the regen paddle, the ICE will come on. Basically, the system recognizes that it cannot feed the battery any more charge and because the driver asked to slow the car with the regen, it decides to turn on the ICE to do that. The ICE is then reluctant to turn off again. I've had mixed success activating and then deactivating HV mode to get back to EV driving. I've been slow to remember not to use the regen paddle when the battery is full to avoid this situation.

The biggest complaint is the range estimator. If that is the biggest problem (presumably solvable with a software update), compared to other newly designed cars, the Clarity is awesome. Just look at all the problems with first year Teslas. The list is immense. I've found Clarity EV range indicator to be fairly accurate and generally underestimates the range a bit. Regarding HV range, the most important gauge is the amount of gasoline in the tank. I found the Clarity's to be the most accurate of any car I've owned so it's pretty easy do the math in your head. Knowing that, I had absolutely no range anxiety during a recent road trip.
