    My CEVS story.

Got my 2022 SEL on July 14. Went to a bike race in Baltimore, got stuck in traffic and had the ac on for an hour. (Someone mentioned running ac prior).

charged overnight to 90% and the. Warning sign came on the next day.
I noticed lower than usual kilowatts/mile (3.3 vs 4.2) on the drive back to dc

Light is still on. Calling to get hyundai care to disconnect and connect the battery.

  3. Hi, I just joined the forum as I was searching for this particular error while I was sat in the car wondering what the hell was wrong with it.

So a bit of background... after a 10 month wait since ordering the car it finally turned up today. After all the usual form filling, and general discomfort of being in a dealership for longer than 10 minutes we drove away in our brand new Kona Ultimate and left behind my perfect 2016 Nissan X-Trail Tekna that we part exchanged.

It was that uneasy excited driving away in a new car feeling, enjoying the torque-y sharp drive of the Kona, but a bit overwhelmed by all the flashy bits in my eyeline... so after about 2 miles we were sat at a set of traffic lights at a busy junction (or intersection for our post-colonial friends ) when more things started flashing at me in the form of a big orange circle with the 'Check Electric Vehicle System' error.

So there's me wondering, OMG what have I done the car wont go... and I can't hear the engine! ( - brain still in ICE mode). I checked the 'gear' selector, and it would only let me select Neutral or Park... I tried restarting a few times, to no effect... by this time a major queue of cars had formed behind me and the horns started honking!!

Luckily, some kind fella coming the opposite direction saw the predicament, pulled alongside, and asked if I needed a push... not sure if he was trolling me, I said I did. He said he would park up and come help... then drove off, by this time I was mortified, so embarrassed and my wife was in tears (we'd already had a stressful day thanks to the dealership, but that's another story). But true to his word the guy came back, and with the aid of the guy in the car behind pushed us clear of the junction.

Can you imagine the embarrasment and same of having to be unceremoniously pushed out of the way by complete strangers in what is clearly a brand-new car. The guy just laughed and shook his head when I told him I'd just collected the car... probably putting him off any thoughts of getting an EV in the future.

Anyway, we called the dealership, who were in disbelief but sent the guy who dealt with us out to where we were stranded... though not sure what the plan was as he's just a salesman. So, while we were waiting, I set about doing the usual things, turning off and on again (it works with computers and it's basically a computer on wheels, so it was worth a try). After about 30 minutes of trying and without rhyme nor reason it chimed at me and it said, 'Ready to Drive'. Just in time for the dealership guy to turn up.

The salesman guy said he had a look on YouTube and saw a couple of vids that suggested the positive terminal on the 12V battery might be loose. We checked, and it wasn't! As the car was working, I suggested we me move to a more appropriate location and during the short drive the error never came back. However the salesman wasn't happy with us driving away now the car was working again as he was worried it might happen again. He wanted to take it back and have the car checked over, so he suggested we take his car, which we did.

So, day one we have a used Hyundai Bayon sat on the drive which was not what I was expecting... but I can say, the 1 litre mild hybrid engine on that thing is a pokey little beast, surprised me how well it drove. After reading this thread, I'm now concerned I'm not going to see the car for weeks and we're supposed to be going on holiday up to Scotland next week, so God knows what's going to happen now!? It's certainly not what you expect when you collect a brand new almost £40K car!! I'm now wondering if a few thousand extra on a Tesla would have been the better option... but the question is do I have the record for the shortest time to having a kaput Kona?

    Tl;Dr
I have the same problem 2 miles after collecting the car brand-new from the dealership - is that a record?

  5. So after having the car for 3 days the dealership is now reckoning that the high voltage battery is overheating and the reason it restarted on the first instance was that after 30 minutes it cooled down enough to restart. Anyway, they didn't know how to progress, so they sent all the info they had to the Hyundai UK HQ Tech Team for advice who then asked the garage to do some further tests...

The garage did the tests and sent the info back to Hyundai and we're awaiting acknowledgement... so now a week in and still no wiser and no idea when I'll get the car back... on the plus side we've got a nice Mercedes GLA AMG-Line as a courtesy car to run around in...

  6. After 2 miles driving the pack would not even be close to overheat temperatures even without active cooling. What was the SOC of the pack when you picked it up? If it was 100% I would suspect an issue with the cells themselves, perhaps the dealer charged it to full capacity just before p/u. The problem could be a temperature sensor in one of the modules if the SOC was less.
Whatever the cause, I hope the problem is solved within too long and you get to finally enjoy the car after your long wait;)

  8. Yeah, I agree, it almost certainly means a new battery pack but after that all will be well with the car. It was nicely-detailed story though, I really thought I was there!

Regarding stress buying a new car - that is thankfully absent here. New car prices are fixed by most importers and it's just a matter of paying and driving away. We still get the upsell attempt for ceramic coating or financing but that's as bad as it gets. Nothing like the games played at US dealers where they hide your trade-in or "accidentally" lose your driver's license.

  9. Well a bit of an update...
After some back and forth between the dealership technical department who literally had no idea what was wrong after 2 weeks they decided a replacement "traction motor' was required and they had no idea when that would turn up...

So we went on our trip to the Have glands of Scotland in the lovely Mercedes GLA hire car that was provided as a courtesy because they had none of their own at the dealership.

A week or later after our trip we were contacted and try old our car was all fixed and ready for collection .. yay!!

So a couple of days later we went to collect it... and because I'd barely driven the thing once I got the keys we sat in the dealersip's car park while I reacquainted myself with the controls etc.... Anyway some 20 minutes later, I'm happy, the wife is happy and away we go... Not! :(

The orange triangle of doom appears and the car won't move...

So now two weeks later, we're still in the GLA awaiting another 'part' which they haven't told us the nature of and yet again, no idea when it might arrive...

    Tl;Dr
We still haven't got the car, and have no idea when we will...

    advice?
I have a 2020 Kona EV with 61,000 miles on it, and on Sept. 13 got the lovely "check vehicle system" error message. Car was towed to the dealer, and I was told the next day that I also needed a complete battery replacement. It's now over 6 weeks later, I'm now on my second rental car, and still waiting for more information. My dealer was told to order the parts thru the "tech line" for my car, and they are unable to get any info from Hyundai about when the parts will be sent to them. I called the customer service line today, and was told they will "expedite" my case, and to expect a call in 3-5 business days!
The Kona replaced my first generation Nissan Leaf, which I had for 8 1/2 years, and only replaced for more range and space. Never had this kind of issue with that car--now questioning this purchase. I have spoken highly of this car, but would not recommend to anyone now, given how poor communication has been from Hyundai.
    Anyway, wish me luck!

  11. Was your Kona subject to the big battery recall? Did you have the battery replaced previously?

The battery has not been replaced previously. I have had the recall inspections and "software upgrades" but have not been told battery is officially recalled for my car.

just got recalls completed last week at the same time they "fixed" my EV system warning. the car is still drivable. apparently it threw a code while I was charging overnight... (I always charge to 100% level 2 home charger if possible).

unfortunately, my charging had been reduced down to 90% max from there on. the light is no longer there but its a bummer that Im (AGAIN) capped on my range. I don't know how long this would take them to fix. but, I sure do hope it gets fixed.

Well, it just occurred to me today. I have been on a trip for a few days and drove my Kona down to 14% charge got home and level two charged it and it stopped charging at 93%. The dreaded orange! With check EV system was on. I called and got it towed to the dealership and that was after trying to jumpstart it and removing the positive cable for a few minutes as well. Last week I had some issues with the 12 V battery as well so right now this car is not looking really great to me. I am fearing the worst as far as a main battery change at this point. At least the dealership gave me a loaner for now and it’s just a waiting game to see what his next. I drive a 2021 Kona ultimate. I will reply to this post as I get updates I do drive the car pretty hard about 100 miles a day so the car has almost 12,000 miles at this point.

  16. Are you running any app that indicates cell voltage differential? It would be nice to know what module(s) are more apt to cause the BMS/Vehicle to go into "stupid mode", although my money would be one located within the taller rear stack with less active thermal management.:(

I agree because I rarely charged over 90%. I don’t run any apps though. I will update when I learn more.

Just got word that a new main battery has been ordered and it’ll be here in a couple of weeks…

  19. Traction battery? ... in a couple of weeks? That would be a major improvement with what has occurred previous. What is your location...maybe add it to member name area.
    Good luck:rolleyes:

I’m in Kingston NY. I am thinking that is BS too and way too fast of an estimate but we will see. Yes main traction battery.

  21. There may be more in the supply pipeline these days. My traction battery was ordered on 26th Oct and I was told it had arrived on Monday, about 10 days later and my Kona still runs perfectly. It goes in next week, fingers crossed it's all good ...

My 2021 Kona has been in the shop since late September, waiting for a new battery to arrive. I've never been told about a battery recall. I took mine to the shop because I got there dreaded "Check Electrical System" warning message. Still no delivery date on when the new battery is coming. Any suggestions on how to expedite battery shipment? I'm quickly losing faith in Hyundai even though I love driving this car.

Update: Hyundai reimbursed me for the cost of the rental car I needed while waiting for my traction battery replacement. They wanted to reimburse me using Zelle, but I couldn’t go that route since I don’t have an account at a bank that works with Zelle. Eventually they mailed me a check, took about 10 weeks in total.
Car still runs fine with the new battery.
