Well, Gopher our 2017 Nissan Leaf that we picked up in January of this year just got her traction battery replaced last week! When we purchased the car it had 8 bars out of 12, after a quick call to Nissan Canada they assured me that it was under warranty until May of 2026. We completed the deal and a couple days after we brought her home I booked her in for a battery health check at Windsor Nissan. After inspecting the car my service advisor told me that the car did indeed have a battery that was in warranty replacement territory. He forwarded the issue to Nissan Canada for a decision. About 2 weeks later I got a call from said service advisor that warranty had been approved and the battery had been ordered. No arrival date was discussed as there was no way to know for a bit. Early in June I was informed the battery had been shipped and would arrive in mid July. A date was set and we dropped Gopher off on a Tuesday morning. Later Wednesday I was called that the car was ready to pick up. I asked the service advisor if he could confirm the capacity of the new battery and he said assuredly that it was a 30KHW. I thanked him and headed to pick up the car. Once I signed off on the paperwork and got into the car I fired it up and it showed 62% SOC and 164km on the Guess O Meter!!! This bode well for the battery capacity....I knew it was a 40KWH, but still I plugged in the OBD reader and fired up Leaf Spy and it confirmed that it was a 40KWH. Really good news. When I arrived home I plugged the car into my Level 2 power supply and let her charge....finished off at 288KM anticipated range! Well been driving it for 2+ weeks now and it has more than ample range! To say we are delighted is an understatement....this takes our previuos maximum warm weather range from about 135 - 145km. To well over 250km. Amazing our 7 year old Leaf is a new car. It compliments our 2022 Ioniq5 extremely well and we love them both but in all honesty I really do love that quirky little Gopher! Cheers! Mike and Ally
Great to hear and congratulations on the new (free) additional range. Should last another 7 years easy, I sure enjoyed mine when I had them...BTW excellent name for your Leaf
Thanks....our Ioniq5 is Astro, one of my old MG's is Betty....we tend to name all our vehicles for some weird reason! Cheers Mike
I think you're damn lucky the battery was still under warranty. Here in Canada if your Leaf battery craps out my understanding is that you're pretty well SOL. It is shocking to learn that Nissan can replace a 30kwh with a 40 when people were being told it couldn't be done. My 2018 still showed all the state of health bars after 5-1/2 years and 90,000kms. Lack oft battery thermal management was never an issue. It was a really good car and never had any mechanical, software or battery issues. One of the reasons I moved it along was my frustrations with public charging. The other was Chademo making the public charging experiences even more miserable. The Leaf could have become the VW Beetle of the EV world. If they had made CCS or NACS charging available in the new models I would have happily bought another one. Keep it simple, reliable, repairable and I'm in. I ended up trading in on a VW ID.4 all wheel drive. The physical car is great and has double the range which covers my most extended service territory without needing a charge along the way. The software is klunky at best. And there's no display of battery SOH or operating temperature which I find disappointing. Only time will tell if it will be a reliable as the Leaf.
Hey Paul Yeah I had heard all the horror stories of warranty issues but we had absolutely 0 issue getting this taken care of. And the range now with the 40kwh battery is awesome. Now for roadtrips and stuff we use our 2022 Ioniq 5 which we absolutely love! I agree with all your points about the Leaf....could have been so much better...but as it stands it is our grocery getter, local trip car and it is a well built little beast I must say! Cheers Mike
Congratulations on winning the Nissan lottery not once but twice. 2nd time scoring a 40 kWh battery and first time on finding some dope who didn’t know he was sitting on a goldmine
