Seeing as I got above trade in value ($22,400 after Sales tax reduction) on a 2016 Leaf it will turn out to be a mediocre deal as apposed to good, and the value of that trade in on May 1st will also be depreciated. It would be prudent IMHO for the (G word) to at LEAST reimburse the federal sales tax differential (not much, but ...)
Yea, This is kind of bulls**t. I don’t understand why they can’t simply make it retroactive to 2019. This would solve so many problems. I wonder if claiming the rebate and “playing dumb” holds any merit? I’m only partly joking...
Yeah. The frustrating part is that they effectively depreciated our vehicles by $5k. I’ve saved ~$600 in gas since I bought my car but still is super frustrating.
I emailed Minister Navdeep Bains. This is what I sent: Honourable Navdeep Bains, I have been sitting idly by for today’s announcement of the Federal Electric Vehicle budget. It has come as a great surprise to me to find out that the vehicle that I had purchased, without Provincial incentive, is currently listed in the “permitted vehicles” list for the $5,000 tax credit. The only issue currently is that I made the purchase in February of 2019, thus making me ineligible for the rebate. Unfortunately, this puts me in greater financial peril than simply denying me the $5,000 tax credit; my vehicle has immediately taken an addition depreciation hit of $5,000 over any new vehicle purchased next month. I had made my purchase for one of two reasons. The first being that I had no intention of letting the provincial Conservative party dictate whether I could buy an electric vehicle by removing the $15,000 Provincial incentive. I wanted to send a message to Mr. Ford that EV sales can and will continue while he is in office. And secondly, I am a huge proponent of living a green lifestyle. Purchasing an electric vehicle was a choice that I made both for myself, and the betterment of our environment and those around me. Unfortunately, it looks as though this may not have been the right decision. Ultimately, it appears as though I should have continued to pump countless kilograms of Co2 into the atmosphere by driving my old vehicle while waiting for May 1st to come around. This would insure that I wouldn’t take an immediate hit of over $5,000 on my 3 month old vehicle. Mr.Banes, I implore you to pressure the Federal government to change the EV tax rebate to be retroactive to January 1st 2019. Please allow the many individuals and family’s who made the right decision to collect the rebate that is rightfully theirs. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response.
I would add to this that this is a government that has been preaching for 4 years about the evils of carbon and the need for all of us to reduce our footprint yet still took four YEARS to introduce an electric vehicle incentive. I suppose we should all suffer for taking individual initiative and by not being as inept and lethargic as government. Seems fair.
I sure hope you folks complaining are not BC or PQ residents with their rich incentives! Otherwise I feel your pain. But this is great news for those of us in Ontario that are still looking. I just hope it survives the fall Federal election.
Hi all. New to forum and have a Kona EV on order here in BC. FEDERAL $5k incentive info in posted pic. Cheers! ... sorry for the duplicate pix. As for the base MSRP ceiling of $45k, apparently Hyundai Canada is lowering the sticker price by $600 in order to qualify.
I just keep going back to waiting over 8 months for this thing and once again having any reward snatched away from me.
Word from the Fed’s in Ottawa yesterday was that only vehicles purchased after May 1, 2019 will qualify for the $5k Federal EV incentive (see attached pic I posted to thread this morning). Lousy for those who’ve already pulled the proverbial trigger. Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
I suppose if we, Kona buyers, join forces with Bolt buyers, we can make it to be retroactive at least for 2019. We should, like Brennan did, wright letters but with multiples signatures and create a mouvment. Don't forget that we all pay to have those incentives.
Couldn't agree more. The only reason anything will come of this is by complaining - the proverbial "squeaky wheel get the grease" tome. Unfortunately, I spoke to a very close friend in the Federal Government - he actually works for Navdeep Bains. It seems as though there's nothing that can be done about it. The Federal fiscal year begins in May and doesn't follow the calendar year. This means that there would be no way to roll back an incentive to BEFORE the fiscal year and new budget began. His words exactly - "The rebate is used to incentivize purchases, not reward those who made the purchase anyway" Regardless, as a tax payer I have a rite to reach out to incumbents and voice my opinion. Perhaps if MANY feel similarly, and voice their opinions, something may be done about it. There is hope, however minor it may be.
