A small company that has been working for several years to commercialize technology to allow EV's and their owners to provide (sell) electricity to the grid while parked plans to introduce a a bidirectional charger this Spring. "... we will be bringing the first UL-approved charger to the market this spring. It’s 25 kw bidirectional DC fast charger. It’s off-board, so you don’t have to modify the vehicle," says David Slutzky, founder & CEO of Fermata Energy in an interview about emerging "V2G" technology here.

Mr. Slutzky says that EV's are parked 97% of the time and can be used for supplemental power storage for the grid, enabling EV owners in the future to monetize their vehicles when parked. The interview article goes on the say, "... if even just a 25% portion of the US vehicle fleet consisted of plug-in EVs, the total storage capacity would be almost 1,000 gigawatt-hours — just about equal to the total electricity generating capacity of the US, give or take a few megawatts."

Interesting stuff, if it ever actually happens!

This might happen much quicker if local electric companies would offer to install these devices in homes for free and pay out for electricity purchased and guarantee the amount extracted from a vehicle (or any other connected battery) would never drop below a certain percentage.

This two way stuff can take stress of the grid but its scam. Tesla does a good analysis of why its going in the wrong way.
But in essence we need to be cutting the cord on this crap. If you own a home no one should be selling you power and anything you sell back to the grid that you generate should be fully voluntary and at a large premium. The grid short of something like zero point is never going to be able to sell you this stuff cheaper than you can generate it its just another rent seeking scam. We need to get to the point where the grid tie is only ever an emergency back up and only paid for when and if it is ever needed. Residential hardening which is crucial comes from roof top solar and large at home batteries.
