Hello, We accept delivery on our 2023 VW ID.4 next week and I need to get a home charging station installed. Our electric company will rent us one but I want to research purchase options also. Anyone have any brand preference or other insights to share? Thank you!
You're in luck! @Tom Moloughney, who tests and rates home charging stations just put out the first of three installments of his top recommendations for 2023. This first group and video covers 48-amp units, the next one will feature 40-amp units, and the 3rd portable units.
I suggest you make sure that any EVSE you buy that is UL listed, as a few cheap Chinese ones have caught on fire. Hardwiring the EVSE is the safest method. However, if you go the receptacle/plug method use a commercial grade receptacle, as we have seen a few receptacle/plug installations melt into a potential fire risk. https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/psa-another-melted-nema-14-50-receptacle.126579/
FWIW, I had a Grizzl-E installed -- hard-wired -- when I moved into my current home about 14 months ago and it's been absolutely rock-solid. They make a number of different models, depending on how simple or fancy you want to go. I went the simple, inexpensive route -- I don't drive enough to feel like I need a smart charger.
