Actually, if one compares apples to apples, the price of the Model Y that’s available for sale today (long range version) is up $10k in past year; Base price is $58990 as of today’s Tesla website.

Unfortunately CNET used very sloppy journalism in it’s piece, which was parroted by other websites. CNET conflated the standard Model Y, which was available only for a few weeks in January of this year, at a price of $39,990, (dropped because the standard range was under 280 miles) with the long range version which started the year at $48,990.

The proposed federal incentive has changed quite a bit from the one you quoted. Gone are the limitations based on price below $80,000. Senate will modify the House version and a final version is yet to be hammered out; however, it does appear that Tesla and GM will be included.

  3. CNET did actually state that the $17K was based on the price of the no longer available are model. Does your Tesla website price include destination charges?
Is the info from autoweek also inaccurate?

The price has gone up about 20% in less than a year. Aren’t EV’s supposed to be getting less expensive? 7334F345-FE93-4733-8115-78846C7773EF.jpeg

I just sold my 2018 Touring with 15,000 miles to Carmax for $26,200. Picking up my Mustang Mach E in a few days. So, it's time to say goodbye to all of you on this forum, and thanks for the help over the years.

  5. Did they charge you the hated “market condition” price increase on your new Mustang?

No, I’m paying MSRP. I placed the order last April. There is a list maintained at macheforum.com of dealers who don’t add surcharges.

While I will miss the Clarity, I bought it specifically as a bridge to the car I really wanted, a reasonably-priced BEV with good range, not made by Tesla. The Mach E fits that description.

My cost of ownership for the Clarity comes out to $14 a month over the three and a half years I had it, factoring in purchase price, government rebates, and selling price. I probably bought about 20 gallons of gas over the years, plus many electrons.

The Ford dealer said he could offer only $20,000 as a trade-in, and recommended that I sell it instead. Carmax beat Carvanna by about $1,000.

Tough to argue with that list. All you left out was "and a frunk with a drain."

Feeling very sad at the prospect of selling my Clarity. Even though it's an inanimate object, I have a deep emotional attachment to it.
Just two more payments left to my lease and instead of the hassle of purchasing it from Honda, then engaging with the DMV, then with Vroom, several local dealers are willing to match the Vroom offer. I had been planning to buy it at the end of the lease but because of the pandemic we really do not need two vehicles. My work shifted to remote and we almost never go out.

Vroom and all non-Honda dealers are not an option to sell to unless you go the purchase it first route.

Yes, thanks, found that out. Another Honda dealer will match a KBB offer, which is higher than Vroom's. Amazing.

Did you also check Carvana and Carmax? Those were higher than Vroom when I sold my Leaf last month. But YMMV.

Yes, I checked Vroom, Carvana, and Carmax. Then decided to run it past KBB, which amazingly came up with a higher number. Within an hour, I received emails from three Honda dealers who worked with KBB and would match the KBB offer. So, I went with the first Honda dealership that contacted us. KBB offered $23.5. The car had just under 24,500 miles on it, with two months left on the lease. Because I had a very long work commute (which morphed into WFH), my lease terms were $387 per month for 20K miles per year, for 3 years. We paid zero down for the Clarity, received all the rebates, etc.; the lease buyout was $12,224 (the final lease buyout would have been $11450). The Clarity is the most comfortable and quiet car I've ever driven. It was 100% problem-free (I did recently get the trivial "tire pressure low" warning). Overall, it got 79 mpg. I would drive EV to the freeway; some EV on the freeway but mostly HV on the freeway, to and from work, or wherever; EV from the freeway to back home.

The acquisitions manager at Honda said it was astonishing that I'd be getting almost $10 back. He said his wife's Clarity now had 100K miles on it. Like me, they love the Clarity. (He also mentioned their windshield replacement was still back-ordered. I had no idea they were so expensive.)
Anyway, I'm still sad and ambivalent about selling the car. I had extreme seller's remorse and even called the dealership to ask if I could cancel the sale. No. There are quite a few Cs on the roads in southern California but Teslas are ubiquitous; they look sort of cheesy and ordinary.
Unlike many on this blog, I've cooled on EVs after reading about the environmental devastation associated with procurement of lithium and cobalt: scraping the seabeds and plundering primeval forests in the DRC. Hydrogen seems a preferable alternative.

  15. Did you put your agreement to sell to the dealer in writing? If not in writing, it may open a few legal options if you really want to keep her.

Thanks, yes, sadly. We signed the paperwork before leaving the dealership. I checked Honda Financial this morning, also, and the lease was terminated or "grounded." I spent the weekend scouring the web searching for a new Clarity. As everyone knows, there aren't any. My Clarity got maximally great care so someone is going to get a wonderful car.

I, too, think hydrogen vehicles have a future; however, the current and foreseeable future designs are all hybrid and thus still rely on a large battery and the fuel cell itself has a lot of precious metals too.

One of the benefits of the prolonged drought in SoCal is a rich new source of lithium. What used to be the Salton Sea is now little more than a puddle. But the original footprint of it, now a dry bed, is rich with lithium just waiting to be extracted.

Yes, there are no easy remedies. I am personally contemplating joining the "degrowth" movement. Not sure about the "socialism" aspect of it, however.

Yes, though there are pros and cons. The Salton Sea was always a crucial part of the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds. Not sure what the associated development of the area would portend.

  21. I’m sure once the great minds decide on more oil and lower gas prices or reducing greenhouse emissions, we’ll be told what’s best to drive.

Torquenews.com reports today that at an average price of $25,519:

  23. Interesting. How is it that one of the most poorly advertised and poorest selling new vehicles a year ago should become the most hottest-selling used vehicle in America today? Go figure.
