  1. I released this video on Friday morning, so if you ever wondered...

How does the Telsa Model Y compare to the Kia Niro EV now that I have driven my Niro for over 2 years? In this video I show you a side-by-side comparison as well as my impressions on acceleration, handling, and road noise, among other things. The Tesla Model Y was on my want list when I ordered my Niro EV in 2018, but it was not available at the time, so this video is a great way for me to discover and share what I missed and did not miss out on.

A big thank you to Patrick Beauchamp for letting me use his Model Y to make this video, I really appreciate it, and don’t miss the bloopers at the end of every video I make. I hope you enjoy it and if you have any questions, please let me know.

I would have liked to have seen you use the voice commands on the Model Y. I think you kind of missed the boat leaving the voice commands out your video.

  4. There are voice commands in the Niro EV as well and it would have been an interesting comparison, but the video is already 20 minutes in length and I only had a few hours with the car to do everything. I would also have liked to have done a range test, but if I had put in everything the video would have been an hour long . This version is more geared towards the overall physical and driving differences for those who consider both vehicles.

Sometimes engineering specs, a table of numbers, do not translate well into the owner's experience. This YouTube video did a great job of pairing engineering numbers with human experience. Well worth the time.

Well you made it a point about the lack of button on the glove box, but didn't bother to mention anything about using the voice command to open the glove box.

I found it disappointing that your video and other folks videos don't show the voice commands.

  8. It is a great idea for another video. I have a few more in the works right now, but I will try to get one done. I did not know that there are no videos about it so it would fill a void. Thanks for letting me know.

There are videos of Tesla voice commands, however, you and other reviewers make a big deal out of the lack of buttons and having to use a touch screen. But time-and-time-again you and other reviewers fail to mention that you can push a button on the steering wheel and issue a voice command to accomplish the task.

    Color me disappointed!

  11. I understand what you are getting at and agree, but I am just a guy who makes videos, alone, from his basement at home, about things that I like and that I think can help people; I am not a car specialist, nor am I a journalist. YouTube is a hobby that I do because I enjoy helping people if I can, while having fun. Before June 18th 2019 I had never touched a camera, never made or been in a video, nor reviewed anything. I have made and will continue to make mistakes, this is a learning process that has been quite steep at times, and I will always try to make fair and balanced reviews, but there are bound to be certain things that I am unaware of, or forget to go over, since EVs are very complex and feature packed. I hope to not disappoint in my next video :)

  13. I don't think the Nero is the best Hyundai/Kia comparison to the Model Y. The new Ioniq 5 features really show where Tesla is lacking and behind in EVs and car design in general.

That video is impressive. If I was looking for a new car, would certainly take a really close look at this one.

  14. Good article, although of course it doesn't show the major benefit of Tesla being the abundant (as far as DC charging installations in Canada exists today) and reliable proprietary supercharging network.

  15. Not in BC here, though. Tesla only on the main routes. And if you want to go up north, need to buy a chademo adapter (my son paid $600 for his) to take advantage of all the fast chargers. And chademo's days are numbered, too.

I think it is just a matter of time before CCS takes over, ...everywhere.

Superchargers sell Teslas ... and nobody else.

The CCS-1 chargers do not sell Teslas and are rapidly teach non-Tesla EV owners valuable (and expensive) lessons.

  17. Thank you very much, I appreciate it. You are correct, the Ioniq 5 and EV6 will be better comparisons, but they are not available in Canada and there are only three Ioniq 5 press cars in Toronto since last week, so it is impossible for me to make a comparison at this time. As for the Niro EV vs the Model Y comparison, there are many people who consider both, like I did, but there were no comparison videos, which is why I made it :)

Thank you. The Supercharger network availability depends on where you live. Here in the province of Québec there are far more DCFC stations than there are Superchargers and there are many Tesla owners who buy the CHAdeMo adapter to be able to go places where they otherwise could not since there are no Superchargers at locations that are not city centers.
