What is that beeping? (new owner)...

    Hello all -

I just bought a 2020 Clarity Touring (I've owned a 2003 Insight and a Prius Prime in the past).

I keep hearing beeps at some points and I don't know what they are. I looked in the manual with no luck.

    1. I have the auto-lock when I walk a way on, so I expect one beep when I get a certain distance away. But I often here a beep before that (that sounds the same, I believe) when I exit the car, before I walk away (even when I walk away pretty quickly). What could that be?

    2. Also, today I heard a very rapid series of beeps (seven or so) when I closed my door (and maybe my trunk). What would that be? Again, I tried to look this up with no luck.

Rapid beeps let you know autolock will not happen. Most often this happens when I leave the car while it's still on. It also does it if it thinks there is a key in the car.

I get a single beep when I close the door. I hear the door locks click as I walk away but no beeps. Basically as I close the last door, I'll get one beep to know it's good, or rapid beeps because I've left the car on.

Thank you for that information! There is a setting that makes the locks beep when they lock. I have that on. I guess that's why you don't get the beep as you walk away?

Supposedly, only one fob (in our case, my wife's fob) can be set to perform the walk-away locking. She hears a beep when she closes the door and a second beep when she gets about 10 feet away and the locking occurs. I hear a single beep when I press the button on the door handle to lock the car--my fob doesn't do the walk-away locking. Some on this forum have reported they have been able to get both fobs to perform the walk-away locking. It won't lock if you leave a door or the trunk ajar, or if you leave a fob inside the car.

You all have answered my question well, thank you! Do you know if there is a section in the manual that describes all of the beeps and what they mean?

If you haven't already, you should download the PDF version of the Clarity Owners Manual, which has much more information than the Clarity Owners Guide that comes with the car. Even though it's the 2018 version, not much has changed. The PDF version is easy to search, but not as easy as it could be if it was better indexed. Sometimes it's tough to search because you can't remember--or never knew--the names Honda comes up with for the various parts and features (eg. Power/Charge Gauge, Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, Deceleration Paddle Selector Indicator, and Telematics Control Unit). Still, it's certainly easier to find things in the PDF manual than in the printed manual (which is free if you order it within 6 months of acquiring your Clarity).

I'll do that, but what do you mean about the printed manual? My Clarity came with a printed manual in the glove compartment, like every other car I've ever bought. Is that the manual you're referring to?

You probably received the "Clarity Owners Guide" with your Clarity. The much thicker "Clarity Owners Manual" also fits into the glove box, but I had to order it at https://owners.honda.com/login. Because you have a Touring, you can also order the NAV manual.

I bought a nice leather cover for these manuals and they've been taking up space in my glove box, unopened for years. I use the PDF version of the Clarity Owners Manual all the time.

How long did it take for you to recieve the manuals? I ordered the full manual back in august when I got the car and they have yet to come!

I ordered the manuals in November, 2017, and received them a few weeks later.

The multiple beep/no locking can also happen if you're too close to the trunk's "don't leave the key in here" sensor.

The single beep when you close the doors means that all the doors are closed and will auto-lock (which is signified by the second beep). If, after you have all the doors closed you hear rapid multiple beeps, that means that for one of a variety of reasons the doors will NOT auto-lock. You'd have to push the button on the outside door handle or the lock button on the fob to lock the doors.
