I just had a quick question I wonder if anyone had an answer to. Last winter on a exceptionally cold night I had difficulties with the car operating and it wouldn't run. I took it to the dealer and they told me it was because of the cold weather and a low voltage had triggered a fault. It ran fine after this.
I'm now notice when the weather has gotten cold again down to about 30* Fahrenheit the engine seems to turn on and off quite frequently ( not spirited driving) as I'm driving it and I'm wondering if this is normal or if this is possibly due to a faulty 12v battery?
if it's due to a crap battery what group battery do I replace it with? is it a 51r?

Using the heater? That will cause the ICE to run.

I’ve gone through 2 winters with mine and even down to the 20s F, I am able to drive all EV. That’s with garaging in an unheated attached garage, preconditioning, and just seat heater usage. I have not tried it with extensive heat/defrost usage, but occasional use did not call for the ICE.
This winter, I’m going to use the heater in a more normal fashion and record how much my range suffers.

BTW, the 12 V battery is warranted for 3 years and can be tested and replaced at your dealer. Also, most auto parts stores will test your battery for free.

The 12V battery is a group size 51R.

Not on mine. The Michigan weather zaps the EV range, so if you’re referring to depleting the HV battery and causing the ICE to run, sure. But if I have remaining charge in the HV battery, the ICE does not routinely start even in low ambient temps. And I use and like cabin heat, seat heaters, and I never pre-condition.

Curious to learn what you find...

I know you asked Ken, but just as a point of reference, I’ve posted in other threads on seasonal range variability that here in Lower Michigan I get a high of 67 mpc in the summer, a low of 27 mpc in the winter, and an annual average of 47 mpc.
