Hello all, thought I’d let you know that I received a letter today from Nissan Canada providing an Owner Notification for a voluntary service campaign on my LEAF.

Seems some earlier LEAFs may have had a manufacturing issue (which has been corrected) where the battery bonding plates may not meet Nissan’s internal standards for corrosion resistance. These plates may corrode and in areas where road salt is extensively used (like here in Canada), could break. Also as a potential servicing problem if both plates break, this could lead to a hazardous condition for the servicing technician.

Although no such incidents of any nature have been reported to Nissan, they are conducting a voluntary service campaign as a preventative measure out of an abundance of caution.

Nissan is asking to bring these affected vehicles in for a 1.5 hour servicing to replace the bonding plates and mounting bolts. This service is done at no charge to any owners. Owners receiving this letter should contact their local Nissan Certified LEAF dealer to schedule this service.

I’ve asked Nissan for clarification on how many vehicles are affected by this campaign and which regions are being notified (just in Canada, or in USA, or others?). I don’t have any other info to share but when I get more, I’ll let you know. Nothing that is worrisome, but in case you get a letter, you know its not just you.

I don't see this impacting too many vehicles. Post if you get this notice what region/location you are in.

To start, I'm in Toronto, Canada area.

The regions impacted are North America and Europe, and on certain MY 2011-2017 and MY 2018-2019 Nissan LEAF vehicles. So this spans both Gen 1 and Gen 2 LEAFs. It’s focused on replacing the lithium-ion battery earth plates and bolts, as described previously.

This is not a mandatory government/agency legislated recall, but a voluntary service campaign initiated by Nissan, as Nissan is committed to the safety, security and satisfaction of their customers and passengers.

Issue does not affect battery or vehicle performance.

No word yet on number of vehicles impacted.

Within a few weeks of buying a car I take to Krown for the oil spray treatment. In the past I would do careful preventative maintenance with my ICE cars only to have the bodies rot away while the power train was still good. It's the rust that you can't see that can make a car really dangerous. A car can look great on the outside (especially Saturns with their plastic panels) while the frames are dangerously weakened by road salt. Wishbone and trailing arm suspension components can break right off the frame at some point.

I would assume that the oil spray has reached the bonding plates but will still get the recall work done before the next oil spray application. I consider oil spray a must in areas where road salt is used extensively. The difference is lifespan is amazing.

Thanks all for responding. In speaking with a CDN Leaf Owner that just had this work done, it was uneventful and only took a couple of hours. They also had the BMS update done which went with no issues or any waivers to sign!

My appointment went off fine albeit they kept the car all day. I also had the BMS Update done (to HV Battery "5SA3B). I'll have to test out the rapid charging sometime soon.

I got the update on My2018. Before the update L3 charging tapered to 9 kWh at 80%. After the update, L3 charging only tapered to 25 kWh at 80% with no appreciable increase in battery temperature while charging. Not ideal, but I only L3 charge a couple times a year and never more than once in a day. The increased speed saved me a few bucks on the quick charge coming back from the Cambridge electric vehicle week event.
