Maximum Range on Battery -- Comments

When we bought the car in December the temperature plummeted and was around 10F or less for 3 weeks. We won't talk about EV ranges on most of those days (HV mode most of the time when it gets below around 0F). However, it is starting to warm back up and the range gauge has been in the 30s. I have no doubt it will be in the 50s late spring. Can't wait

With 4000+ miles it has been a great car. Still love the EV range and drive with it. Find I use EV mode all the time, keeps the engine from starting if I accelerate too briskly and the wife doesn't complain when she gets back in (like if I had left it in sport mode, meaning it reverts to normal when it is restarted).

I was thinking the exact same thing this morning. I bought my car in mid Jan during the cold snap so have been seeing EV range of 32-38 miles during February. This morning it was 55 after a warm weekend, and I was showing 45.2 EV range. Looking forward to hitting (or exceeding) the 47 EPA number.

 

We may also need a column to specify if the data is for the PHEV or BEV version of the Clarity.

EDIT: Perhaps a link to a shared Google Sheet would be easier to manage the data?

 

We got 55 miles of actual EV driving on a single charge last week when it hit 69 degrees here. In town driving and no A/C activated (rolled down my window).

 

I got in car thus morning and the computer showed 51 mi range. Since the weather is super nice, in mid 60's Im able to drive w/o ac.

 

Are you driving like a regular car or paying more attention to accelerating/braking?

 

We drive exclusively in EV/Econ mode. I'm lighter on the pedal than my wife but neither of us do anything to bring the ICE online.

Our other car is an old 4Runner which gets about 13 mpg around town. We plan our trips and charging so we don't have to drive the 4Runner unless we have to. We haven't visited a gas station in either vehicle since Dec 20th, but the 4Runner is getting low.

We charge on solar. Our solar system came online in January. Our electric grid cost is about 60% of what it was last year including charging the car, but our car gas so far is zero. At this point we are saving about $150/month overall.

Our top estimated range is around 50 but most days low 40s. I sure am glad we didn't buy a different PHEV designed for 25-30 EV range.

 

I'm still in that gee whiz stage of ownership so I am driving the car relatively gingerly (gentle acceleration, etc), avoiding any hard stops, and using my paddles. More aggressive driving (what's considered normal for most drivers) does impact the range. Driving at highway speeds also has a negative effect (65 mph) for EV range compared to driving around town (25 to 45 mph).

 

The effect of ambient temperature on EV range is quite amazing. I have consistently had a range of less than 30 miles on a full charge. The temps warmed this week and I can see the EV range perk up each morning. Yesterday, with temps in the high 20s, I crossed 30. This morning, with temps in the mid 30s, I hit an all new high of 34 miles!

I can't wait for temps to get into the 50s (maybe in April?)

 

High temperatures here in Utah have been in the 30s for a while. I charge my car in a garage where the temperature is about 50. I usually have a range of 38 to 40 and my all time high is 42. Also looking forward to warmer weather.

 

I feel your pain. We get 20-22 mpg around town with our Outback and I thought that was bad. Won't give up the car though. We can get some pretty heavy snow some winters in these parts so the OEM tires on the Clarity just won't cut it (pretty mild this winter, used my snowblower just 3 times).

 

The 4Runner tows the boat to the lake so it's not leaving our family. It's a great car but the mileage is a killer. Consequently it doesn't get driven much. It's a 13 year old vehicle with only 60,000 miles on it because of the low mileage.

 

My top has been 62 on the gauge, but actual miles checked was 42 over two days with 9 left showing on the gauge. I thnak the car gods I didn't "settle" for a 25 mile range vehicle knowing what I do now about real life performance.

 

I have been getting about 50 miles on all electric without too much effort. As mentioned by others colder weather will adversely affect your all electric miles
