Does anyone else feel slighted and have a bad taste in their mouth today?? I know we have been enjoying our Kona EVs for a couple of months now - but to be punished for being an early adopter and taking a risk just does not sit well with me.

Starting today anyone buying a Kona (preferred or ultimate) qualifies for a $5,000 rebate. It is not retroactive. Purchase must be made on or after May 1st.

Thanks for ignoring us Justin and for those in Ontario - we can attribute most if not all the blame to our lovely Premier, (Dinosaur) Doug.

I welcome the measure in principle, but of course we owners end up paying a like amount in depreciation. Just tough luck on the timing, but an incentive can hardly be made retroactive.

Yup, I posted about this several weeks ago in a different post.
I emailed the minister of Transportation and have yet to hear back.

Definitely sucks being penalized for doing the right thing...

  5. Sure it could. They had four years to make it whatever they wanted. Why is it always an incentive and never a reward?

Thanks Brennan, I figured someone would have brought this up already - just feels too fresh today. I will do the same and email him as well. Please reply with the email address if you can. The more emails the better.

It’s a good letter, but I have to ask, why Jan. 1, 2019? Those who bought Leafs and Bolts in previous years are not entitled to compensation?

I'd love to see this become a standard thing for all EVs.

Hi Pete, you are right, but I guess it all depends on which province you reside in.... In Ontario we have a "gap" from the end of the previous liberal government's incentives of up to $14,000 which ended last summer due to Doug Ford....... up to May 1st.

In my opinion that gap should be filled so any purchases made from Aug-Sep (whatever the date is) in an ideal world should be eligible for federal incentives. And the same rules should be applied to all provinces with similar (Ford) issues.

It's not going to happen but maybe if enough of us bark up the right trees? You never know....

Thanks Brennan. I played off your letter and sent it to Minister Marc Garneau. The ZEV incentive is being run out of his ministry, Transport Canada. Here's my letter if anyone wants to use it / modify.

    --

    Dear Honourable Marc Garneau,

I have been highly anticipating the roll-out of the Federal Zero-Emissions Vehicle Incentive from your Ministry, announced in the 2019 Federal Budget.

It has come as a great surprise to me to find out that the electric vehicle that I had purchased, without a provincial incentive (since wound down in Ontario by the Conservative government), is currently listed as an “eligible vehicles” for the $5,000 incentive.

The only issue with the implementation of the Federal ZEV policy is that I made the purchase back in February 2019, thus making me ineligible for the incentive.

While I understand that the Federal Government operates under a fiscal budget calendar, I strongly believe that the implementation of this policy should be retroactive to the beginning of the calendar year in January 2019.

In Ontario, a lot of potential ZEV owners had to make a tough decision in the face of the mounting evidence of human-caused climate change, and the removal of the provincial ZEV incentive as a result of a short-sighted Conservative government. I do not believe that those who chose to act in reducing their carbon footprint should be punished for making a purchase before an arbitrary date.

The roll-out of the Federal ZEV policy particularly stings from a Federal government that talks about protecting the middle class. While I work to balance a need to do the right thing in the face of climate change, make car payments and ensure my family's needs are met, the ministry's decision puts me in greater financial deficit. Not to mention, my ZEV has immediately taken an addition depreciation hit of $5,000 over any new ZEV purchased in May and beyond.

Minister Garneau, I strongly implore you and your ministry to rethink the implementation timelines for the Federal ZEV incentive to be retroactive to January 2019. In the spirit of taking action on climate change, and to protect the middle class, please enable the many Canadian families who made the zero emissions choice earlier this year to have access to a rebate that is rightfully theirs.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.

That's a simple answer. Most provinces already had incentives in place at that time. In Ontario in particular we had a $14,000 CASH rebate in place until Doug Ford took office and literally obliterated it along with any other environmental rebates (windows/doors, HVAC, Solar panel install etc.) the second day he was in office.

Since the Federal rebate was released in early 2019, it would be a relatively simple "ask" to have it retroactive just 4 months. Asking them to go back potentially YEARS would be an impossibility. You can't ask for money back when money was not allocated for such a cause. "Technically" speaking, even asking it to be retroactive to Jan 1 would be a reach because the Federal fiscal budget year begins in April, not January.

This is excellent d-b! Extremely well written and all pertinent points were hit.
If you'll be so kind as to allow it, I would love to tweak this slightly as not to completely plagiarize it and send my own version to Garneau as well.
The more people that do this - the higher the liklihood that this will be approved.

I think one of the only things we have working in our favour currently is the fact that these vehicles were purchased in relatively low quantities. I personally know several people who held off the purchase of an EV/Hybrid until just such an announcement was made. Obviously now they're all poking fun at me for pulling the trigger too soon. The way I've chosen to look at it - I was at about $550 in fuel per month (at $0.98/L average) in my last vehicle. Quick math would dictate that I've saved bout $2200 in fuel since February when I purchased my car. Had I held off my purchase until May 1, the rebate would only be worth about $2800 to me. This doesn't even include the further depreciation in value of my last vehicle. I would have put nearly 10,000 KM on it in those 4 months. At the end of the day, incentive or not - I think I've about broken even vs. if I'd waited.

Yes, please feel free to use the letter. The more letters sent to Garneau the better.
