Low resolution cameras?

Hi all. This is my first Honda and have been pretty disappointed with the camera (both rear-view and lane watch) resolution and night performance. Is this a Clarity thing or just my vehicle?

I found the backing camera blurry when we bought ours, so I did a test of the other Clarity on the lot before we purchased. It seemed just as blurry, so I assumed it was a feature, not a bug (or at least that there was nothing specifically wrong with the one we were buying). We have loved the car so far, I just don't rely on the backing camera too much at night. I would be curious if others have the same experience.

My cameras don’t seem blurry. So far I’m finding the lane watch camera quite useful since I’ve never had one before.

The resolution of the lane watch camera is quite different than the backup camera. The lane watch has fairly good resolution whereas the backup is pretty poor. The backup looks to be below VHS quality. ;)

You can tell when you get into a newer car that comes with "High Definition" cameras. The new BMW's look super crispy.

I don't think i can complain too much with the price of the Honda and what you get...

The same is true of my Model S. The rear camera is super sharp. It looks 4K by comparison to our Clarity. But like you say, the Clarity is a lot cheaper.

I still can’t help thinking that with how cheap HD cameras are now, they could have thrown one in. The lane watch cam is much better. It seems like it would have been cheaper to dispense with the lane watch camera, give us a traditional blind spot mirror and then put that money towards an HD backup cam.

A few thoughts... Maybe there is a peel off film of plastic that wasn't removed by the dealer. They missed the trunk side film on the lower rear window on ours. If the night time rear camera needs more light, look into increasing the lumen in the reverse light "bulbs."

I have an awkward curve that I have to back into to get to my power outlet, and I have not noticed the lack of resolution as an issue. While I agree that the higher res would be nice, it's not a necessity. None of the extras I've given up from my previous car have brought buyer's remorse so far.

Unfortunately it’s just the low resolution of the camera, not a plastic film. I actually did look for that when I first got the car, but none was to be found. It is what it is.

Our other car is a 2017 Civic, and the resolution of the rear camera is much better than the Clarity. The day we brought the Clarity home, I was convinced there was a plastic film due to the quite evident drop in resolution compared to the civic. Even the lighting of the camera (night time) is poorer compared to the Civic.

Its not a major problem, but I wonder why they went backwards compared to the Civic, especially since the Clarity shares many of the Civic's components.....

I think the tech on the clarity is about 2 years older than any other Hondas. I don't know why. Why wouldn't it just have the same as the Accord?

It's also not just an HD camera, but lack of HD Screen.

Jason, you're probably right. The screen is certainly not a high rez screen. No danger of 4K video ever showing up on our screen! ;)

Is your camera better in narrow mode than fish-eye? Mine is.

John, I think almost any camera looks better in a narrow mode than a fisheye. Mine does.

Is there any way to turn on the rear camera without going into reverse? It’s sometimes nice to check where you’re at in a parking spot. I know there’s a button at the end of the signal lever for the blind spot mirror, which is nice!

Someone a while back likened the to a "parts bin car" - in other words, it is super sophisticated and high tech as a PHEV, but accessories (cameras, infotainment, lack of cross traffic and side traffic alerts, etc.) resembles "they used what was left in the parts bin from making all their other cars."

Luckily they put the money into a bigger liquid cooled battery, electric heating, and rear independent suspension. In the same price range, various other vehicles don't have these.
