Off topic, but . . . grumble . . . sitting here watching it snow.

I have found this an interesting thread, more from the imaginative ideas regarding the car doing something unexpected (surprise?) than the actual question at hand of why the ICE should start. Yet another example of trying to reverse-engineer the car's behavior when we really don't know what inputs the control mechanism is using to make its decisions . . . and the inconsistency that different people do exactly the same thing and their vehicle reacts in a different way.

Several people seem to think that my car is reacting differently from others. Just to point out the situation in this particular thread:

The car was in park for a long period of time while running the A.C.. This is not a situation that many people will ever be in. It's not in HV mode nor in HV charge mode with absolute certainty:)

Has anyone actually done this and NOT seen the ICE kick on?
And once again, I don't see this as a problem with the car at all. Im just trying to guess why it is doing this out of curiosity:)

Yeah click the auto button on the dial for the temp. The car will automatically handle where the air comes from and fan speed and such for better efficiency, I'm guessing you are cranking up the fan speed and since its @ 65 degrees its not able to handle it off the elec alone so has to use the ICE.

I'm not going to slog back through the thread, but my impression was . . . yes . . . that at least one person had reported that they did exactly the same thing and got different results (the ICE did not turn on). Of course, there are two different explanation for that. Either they didn't actually do EXACTLY the same thing, based on the myriad of variables that are flowing into the car's controller, or different cars react in different ways to exactly the same inputs. I'd like to think that the chances of the latter are small, but we sure have seen a lot of cases here where different people do the same thing and see different reactions from their Clarity.

Ok. Here's a picture with auto ac engaged, the car in park, this time 5 miles of ev on the battery, and evidence that neither HV nor HV charged is engaged.

After merely 10 minutes in park, the ICE fired up for approximately 3 minutes.

  10. Does anyone know how the regular car battery is charged? There are posts of people leaving their Clarity in Accessory and needing to jump the regular car battery after draining it. I would guess it is charged by the generator, just like the the big battery ... usually through regen ... but with the car On (not accessory), and parked (regen isn’t available), would it kick on the ICE to run the generator for the regular car battery, and then kick the excess power generated to the main battery pack?

The Clarity (as with all Honda hybrids), uses a DC-to-DC converter to recharge the 12-volt battery from the high-voltage battery. This recharging takes place only when the car is on.

  13. Well, my two theories have been debunked ... I'm stumped. I know, welcome to Clarity ownership.

I guess that it may remain a mystery:)

If this thread dies without having an answer to why; Ill wait another month or 2; and (if it is still occurring) I will then repost this phenomenon. Perhaps by then, someone new may have the answer???

And if any current viewers of this thread happen to sit in park while using their a.c. for more than 20 minutes (not in HV nor HV charge mode;)) I'd be very interested in reading as to whether your ice turns on or not.

I am fairly certain that our only hope to getting answers to these questions is to “invite” a Honda engineer for a chat.

If it involves a trip to Japan, I'm all over it.

Seriously, it will likely be a couple more months before I can sit with the AC on for an extended time, but this thread has me sufficiently curious to do it. Of course, that provides us with exactly one more data point.
