YIKES! Guys, it's really getting weird!

So we just came back from dinner and I observed the most bizarre range behavior yet.

The drive was 8 miles on a level road, in fully electric mode. The ICE never came on once. In this 8 mile drive, I watched as the HV range (no, not EV range) drop, drop and drop some more. In this 8 mile, all electric drive, we lost 28 miles of HV range! We went from 1,000 (where it's been for a while now) to 972.

Now to put this in perspective, since our last fill-up where our HV range went to 1,000 miles, the ICE has not come on once. We've been driving only on electric. In that time I've charged the car multiple times, and the range has stayed at 1,000 miles. Now as ludicrous as that number is, I would not have expected it to change unless I began to use the ICE...and it has, until today, remained at 1,000.

So now, all of a sudden, the HV range decides to drop. For what reason? Why? What changed?

Honda, if you're listening, you really really need to address this. I've never seen anything like this.

I think your car is haunted. That is the only explanation.

Something is clearly wrong with the HV range estimator. I filled up last week after a long road trip it showed 900 miles. After almost a week of driving and using no gas it now reads just under 600 miles. All nonsense.

Yup, so this is exactly the same behavior I saw yesterday. I’m betting this will continue today. There’s just no rhyme or reason.

Let's just face facts - the range estimates are FUBAR - you can go about 45 miles (safely) on EV and 280 miles (safely) on HV - watch your odometer, not your gauges...

So the latest in this bizarre saga. Again, I’m driving only on electric today, and the HV range dropped from 971 to 949 after the first 10 miles of driving. I expected that crazy trend from yesterday would continue, and it did. But then, after hitting 949, the drop stopped and stayed after hitting 949.

Why, for what reason, based on what looney algorithm, who knows? It’s almost become comical.

Maybe it could be estimating having to run the ice to keep the fuel from going bad

I'd agree with that IF the ICE were running, but it wasn't. I first rolled the window down at a traffic light and there was absolutely no sound coming from the engine. So I knew the ICE wasn't running. At another point I even got out of the car to confirm the engine wasn't running. It wasn't.

Now if you're saying it was predicting based on a future assumption it would have to turn on the ICE for fuel preservation, I guess that's possible, but I honestly think that's highly unlikely.

Interestingly, in the week and a half I've owned the car, I've never seen the kind of ranges you folks see.

My EV range has been between 0 and 28 miles and my HV range has been between 70 and 300 miles (correlated to gas usage).

Even my EV range makes complete sense - diminishing rapidly when going uphill and actually going up slightly during extended downhill drives.

    Maybe it's this cold weather.

Interesting that yours behaves normally. I can’t imagine why yours would do that with the loony algorithm that Honda gave us. Go figure.

Clearly that is the most rational explanation.

In HV drive mode, Clarity uses both the electric drive motor as well as the engine. So it does make sense that the HV range will go down even in fully electric mode. Having a HV range of 900-1000 miles, now that’s another story and definitely a bug in the HV range calculation logic. Every time the Clarity is plugged in for charging, the algorithm should reset and reevaluate the HV range and I believe it's not doing that.

I've been using the economy mode over the last few weeks. So it's really only using the electric motor unless the charge is fully depleted. So considering that, it makes no sense, that all of a sudden, I'd see a dramatic drop in HV range relative to the miles driven.

Mine was normal on the original tank of gas and then after the first fill up the HV range shot up to 600+. It's been doing that every time since and I fill up once a week.

I've done two refills on a longer trip and all my ranges still seem normal and reasonable.

Is it possible the problem has been fixed and needs to somehow propagate through older Claritys? Any way to check the software version number?

Same here. First tank was ok, but after the first refill, not so much.
The gas gauge on the right seems to be accurate. Is anyone having issues with it?

If you drive a long distance on the highway the number will return to normal, but lets all admit it, the estimation algorithm is totally broken. Honda needs to fix it.
