As Spock would say, “Fascinating”. :)

Great post Reagle. I'm a bit confused though. The document says the Clarity PHEV weighs 4965 lbs. Everywhere else says it's 4050 lbs. Is that an error or is our car much heavier than thought?

It’s definitely an error. The 4,050 is correct. I had seen that same 4,965 weight a while back and wondered how the Clarity could weigh more than my Model S with its much heavier batteries. I checked a variety of sources and kept seeing the 4,050.

I noticed the weight difference - at least I was surprised by the figure but didn't make the connection until now. I suspect some editing error. Neither of the other two versions have anywhere near the 4965lb curb weight. The FCV is about 100lb heavier, the BEV is about the same as the PHEV.

There are some interesting photos in that document, too. Besides the ones that are there to orient responders to the different areas of the car, there is this one:

This photo is also strange. Empty cartons all over the the intersection of some 13th and Main St (that looks photoshopped). A "Bug Off" insect exhibit sign…

That's the GVWR, gross vehicle weight rating. The fully loaded design maximum for 5 people and cargo. Of course there is a safety factor so it could handle more, but for regular use that is the max.

This might be useful to print and leave in the glove box.
    Thanks!

Very cool, I didn't realize that most of the body panels are aluminum. The vehicle looks very strong too, lots of additional roof supports and lots of high strength steel. I bet it does well in crash tests.

Yeah, those renderings are a bit weird, the water one was just saying you wont be electrocuted by the car if it is submerged in water, no idea what they were trying to show with the boxes rendering.

I tried to reverse engineer the photo, but I couldn't uncover the location. I suspect it's L.A. or S.F. though there's no 13th and Main St in either city. The Bug Off sign poster is associated with some exhibition though. So I suspect some Natural History Museum, and both cities have those.

After seeing pictures of the chassis previously and reading this, it makes sense now as to why the Clarity doesn't offer a sunroof in the Touring model. At least two salespeople made that comment to me during the shopping process. They didn't understand why there was no sunroof in a Touring model (possibly a way of trying to steer me towards an Accord, but who knows).

These are the kinds of technical information that I hope we'll continue to see over the next year. It's going to take some time, though.

The article was interesting. At the end they mentioned that they could hear the ICE when it came on. I can usually hear mine, unless I'm on a particularly rough road. Still wondering if there is something wrong with it.

I hear mine as well, sometimes quite a lot when it is revving high. That doesn't happen very often, though. I think we hear the engine because we are listening specifically for it, plus the car is so quiet in ev mode that any noise becomes accentuated. I just wonder what it sounds like to other drivers. Can they hear it when it is revving high? And do they think there is something wrong with the car? After watching the Alex on Autos YouTube video explaining the Honda hybrid system I understand it more and it put my mind at ease a bit.

Wow! Thanks for this video. Finally, an explanation that makes sense. I will quit worrying now and just enjoy the ride!

It does help explain to me why under certain conditions I will get off the freeway and the engine remains spinning at high RPM for a few miles, even though I'm only traveling between 40-50MPH on relatively zero grade. Makes sense now.

WOW! That was an amazingly thorough and well-executed explanation for a complex subject! My hat is off to the narrator -- even though his artistic ability is no better than my own! ;)

I watch Alex on Autos videos pretty regularly, but I didn't find him until I was researching phev cars last December. That being said, I never watched this particular video until someone else posted it in another Clarity thread on this site. I forget who it was and in which thread, but whoever it was deserves the credit for finding this video.
