I can't speak on the custom-ordered Tesla but had a pretty good experience with buying a program car. See my thread under Tesla S. I have heard that you sometimes don't hear from Tesla for awhile after you put down your deposit on a new one. You'll get an email that they received the deposit but then no update until it is close to your build-out time.
