So our windshield cracked on our Xmas road trip to AZ. Dealer insists it was caused by an impact l, and there is a tiny little mark, but it’s nothing like a typical stone chip. It’s hard to say how it happened one way or another but the local glass installer states there are no aftermarket windshields for the car yet and Honda quoted $1500 for a new OEM one. Krikey! That’s a lot of money!

  3. Ouch! Good news is I think insurers waive the deductible on windshield repairs.

Not USAA! I’m out $500. Better than $1500, I guess.

Due to the low volume of Clarity production and the difficulty in making acoustic-glass windshields, I doubt there will ever be an aftermarket source. I wonder if it would be a wise investment to buy a spare now? It might be worth a lot in 15 or 20 years when people are restoring their classic Claritys.

  6. eek. The LIE is full of construction trucks spewing rocks. I'll 100% need a windshield sooner or later. This does not give me warm fuzzy feelings....

    Acronym encountered. Standard approach:
    1. Unfamiliar, no context offered, not readily searched
    2. Given #1, likely a New Yorker
    3. Run through areas near NYC... Ah, Long Island might fit, assuming there's a "well-known" expressway there

Family member bought a new Toyota RAV4 with fancy cameras (new design) a few years ago. Tree fell on it. Replacement glass was nearly $2000 via Safelite. Seems usual these days.

Sounds like a good reason to keep my 100$ deductible on windshields.

Check through a 3rd party installer and ask what it would cost for OEM glass. Most dealers outsource windows anyway and tack on an surcharge. I had the BMW dealer actually tell me to go to the 3rd party installer they used instead.

Probably not promising that Safelite doesn't have the Clarity. I see you checked other places anyway. That is a bummer. They should start stocking them soon, Clarity sells well enough.

I had a rock hit my windshield a few months ago and had to get it replaced. I also had $500 deductible, but the total cost was over $2100 for an original Honda windshield and realignment of the camera.

Indeed. But never for windshield REPLACEMENT. If repair can be done, it’s free, but if non repairable you pay your comprehensive deductible, whatever amount you selected.

It’s also a state by state thing. In Kentucky, it’s no deductible either way. Probably depends on how well your state legislature was lobbied.

Speaking a "lot of money" for Clarity's part. Months ago we "almost" lost the FOB. Local dealer quote $650 for the FOB + $38 for emergency key + $80 for re-program a new FOB + sale tax (almost 10% in Cal.)...Geez almost $1K for the replacement FOB.(while it's only fifty buck for my other Hybrid's FOB)..Luckily Costco called us since someone found our FOB at a parking lot.

  19. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the CIVIC fob (which you can find dirt cheap) can be used with the Clarity (with the loss of some functionality). We're considering getting one for the use of parking attendants

Am still waiting (area body shops are still playing catchup from the Gulf hurricane) to get the repairs done on my October 'encounter' with a tree branch, which damaged both the windshield and the front of the hood. The windshield portion of the estimate was also $1500. But I have had to replace the windshield on a Toyota Avalon, and the glass repair place had to get one from Toyota at $1700. "Not your father's windshield repair costs."

Interesting. I had no idea. It's rare, but a few states apparently have such a thing. Of course Google knows everything...here's a cut and paste:

The states below have insurance laws which support free windshield replacement:
Kentucky-when it comes to auto glass replacement and windshield replacement the state is a “zero deductible.”
Florida-requires insurance companies to waive deductibles on claims of a windshield.
Arizona– in Arizona, from Peoria, Avondale, Scottsdale and Temple to Flagstaff, Glendale, Gilbert, Phoenix, Surprise, Mesa, Tucson, and beyond one has the option of buying auto glass endorsement or waiver whenever you buy auto insurance. With this, you do not have to pay the full deductible when replacing your windshield replaced.
Massachusetts-most people site it as a zero deductible state of which is a bit, in this case, a misnomer.
New York – insurance companies here offer policies that do not require deductibles when it comes to auto glass replacement.
South Carolina-this is a zero deductible state, and you will receive free windshield replacement from everywhere in the state.

I've occasionally hear a loud crack sound coming from my windshield area with no one around. I worry the temperature changes are affecting it and it might break at some point. Every time it happens I jump and look all around for damage.
