Software update now grossly understates EV range.

I just had the software update on Monday, Nov 12, 2018. The dealership said it was to correct the overstated driving range that could occur showing 999 miles in EV mode. I've never experienced that situation and I have 6500 miles on the car already. Typically it shows 48-50 mile range for EV mode. After the update it only charges to a max of 37 mile range. I checked the distance depleting the charge and I'm only getting 35 miles actual range. Before the update I was truly getting 48 to 52 miles total distance on a full charge before the HV mode kicks in.

Is anyone else experiencing this same issue AFTER the software update.

My EV arrange was unaffected after SB 18-091. Is that the SB your dealer applied?

The updates also reset the history the estimates are based on. Couples with any time on but not moving at the service bay and the estimate gets skewed. Most of us are finding that after a few trips and charging cycles that this will correct itself. Post back and let us know what it does.

Is SB 18-091 intended to fix an EV Range problem? I hadn't heard of it, or seen a copy of the bulletin yet.

SB 18-091 is a fix for the HV range, but it overwrites the historical averages used to predict both your EV and HV range.

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep monitoring. I also noticed a significant drop in the HV range. I brought the car in with a full tank and showing 324 mile HV range. After the update the max HV range was 260 miles. After driving it a while in HV mode the range was changing towards the better. Because I saw it increasing during use, I didn't make a note of that in my post. I haven't seen any change in the EV mode range after several cycles.

I've seen several posts claiming temperatures affect the range, but I was in an area last weekend where the temps was 29° for the low and it still charged to 48 mile EV range. Temperature on Monday when the update was performed was only 38°. Temps the past few days have been at freezing for lows. I need to keep watching and see if it goes up as temps warm up a bit this week.

Yes. I also had an update on Oct 22, 2018 and my range dropped dramatically from 80+km(50 miles) to 65 km. When I raised the issue with Honda I was told the odometer had been reading incorrectly. I pointed out that when it said EV 80 km I drove 80 km. Their answer was that I was wrong and that there is no way the car could ever have gone further than 65 km even though their published data stated up to 76 km. I also see from other posts, ranges of up to 98+ km have been achieved which I also had achieved. I believe they are limiting the range to protect the life of the battery. They have effectively reduced my use of the vehicle by 20%.

I've had all of the software updates done, and my EV range is definitely lower than it was over the Summer, BUT....that is attributed to colder weather here in CO. Has your ambient temperature dropped consistently? Are you using the heat and or seat heaters? That apparently factors in to the calculation.

My history did not erase when my updates were applied.

I thought everyone who got their HV Range update saw their full-tank HV range snap to 327 miles (I think that was the common number, but I might have that wrong).

Mine did - 525 km or 327 miles.

I had the software update and for the first few weeks, range was same as before at about 48 miles. But as soon as temps started to dip, range went down to low 40s, then high 30s. And after yesterday's commute back in the first snow storm, range this morning was down to 32.

I do have auto climate control set to 72 and ECON mode on. I do turn off he seat heater after a few minutes. Yesterday's drive I did bypass auto climate control and put on defroster full blast including rear defroster. More likely contributing factors that lowered the estimate range.

Make sure to pre condition while still plugged into the charger, should help a bit with the range since the car will still be close to 100% while the cabin is (mostly) heated.

    dnb,
The issue I had isn't with the HV range, it is with the EV range.

    UPDATE:

I took it to the dealership on Friday. They applied software update 18-097 and it seems to have worked. Full charges this weekend were 47 miles, 50 miles and 50 miles. Temperature has been hovering in mid 40's for morning lows. This seems to have fixed the issue with the EV range.

18-097 addresses a charging fault issue where the battery won't fully charge or stops before fully charged. It seems to have fixed this issue as well.

@Ted, dnb's suggestion, to keep the car plugged in while PC'ing, does have a possitive impact on EV range.

Sorry, dnb. That was meant for insightman as I had quoted in my response. He was talking about HV range not preconditioning.

I had various updates applied a few weeks ago, concurrent with a slight temp. drop here in Smokey California. My EV milage estimates dropped from high 40s/low 50s to high 30s. Today it started at 43. So, it's taking a while, but the range estimate is coming back to what I experienced before.

I've had 18-097 done at the same time with all other updates. No changes in EV range, only HV which went down from 999 to normal. But a few weeks later, when temps started to drop and heater started to get used, EV range dropped down to high and now mid 30s.
