Hi, I'm new to the forum and a new owner of a 2018 Clarity PHEV. I'm about to embark on a long road trip and am wondering what a good Android app is that will show me locations for charging stations across the southern states. Do people have a favorite app? Also, what kind of connector does the Clarity accept? I can't find any specification in the manual, yet charging stations seem to be distinguished by the plugs they use. Thanks for your tips.

The Clarity navigation system shows all the charging stations in the local area, so you don't need an app. The connector is a standard SAE J1772, which seems to be a universal type. Not sure you will fine many across the south. Where I live, the only ones showing on the map are at dealerships.
    Congratulations on your new Clarity.

Thank you barnesgj. I need to look more at the gps system. Two apps i looked at, Plug Share and Charge Point, list many charging stations that use the J1772 connector. Charge point showed 5 such stations on the 100 mile route I took today to Portland ME while the navigation system did not show any.

Well, you already know more about it than I do. :)
Sorry, I couldn't be more help. This is my first plug-in and I am still learning.

Congrats on your first plug-in!!! (I assume) :D

I keep the Plugshare, evgo, chargepoint and blink apps on my phone.

From plugshare you can see basically any public chargers. Since your car does not have DCFC, youll probably want to turn off all listings except for ‘EV Plug’.

The individual EVSE provider apps are useful as well. Most of the major provider apps allow you to start a charge session from the app. You can also see if the station is currently in use. Very useful!

Wow! And I thought everything was standardized. You really do need an app to keep it all straight.

It can be confusing at first! J1772 is basically the standard for L1 and L2 charging. Every automaker in the US uses this except for Tesla.

DC Fast charging has 3 standards more or less. Chademo, CCS and Tesla supercharger. These DC fast chargers can rapidly charge an all electric vehicle at 150+ miles /hour or more!

Most automakers are settling on CCS for the fast charge standard. Honda uses the CCS standard for the Clarity Electric (BEV) for instance. But Nissan is the hold out still pushing Chademo.

The Clarity PHEV does not support these fast chargers, so you can uncheck them in plugshare. Your fast charge is the gas tank! :D

Thanks for the tips Wade and Barnes. My trip starting this weekend will touch all 4 corners of the country, but not driving across the northern tier. I envision stopping at hotels and restaurants that have charge stations i can use. I don't know yet how realistic that will be, but maybe by the end of the trip i will know this car inside out

On Google Play Store there are the 2 apps EV Station Finder USA and EV Station Finder Plus USA:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=evse.finder
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=evse.finder.plus

EV Station Finder finds EV charging stations in USA along a route or around a location, given by the current location or by an address. In Settings you can specify the connector type or the supported charge levels of your car.
    Have a look at it.

Plug Share is also a good one and has similar features. It found all the stations around my location in KY and up to Cincinnati. I haven’t used EV Station Finder so I cant comment on which is best.
