When iOS 12 goes live in a few weeks, it reportedly supports Waze in CarPlay. Will our Clarity's then automatically get this capability, or do we need to wait for Honda to do something to enable it? My understanding is that support for 3rd party maps such as Waze and Google Maps is not included in the iOS 12 Betas, and therefore has not been tested publicly.

I believe the 3rd party access is already baked in, but the API from Google/Waze is only baked into their respective betas. So you would effectively need betas from both parties... and getting on the Google/Waze beta list is slim to none considering that most want the beta just to have the functionality before everyone else, not to actually be a proper beta tester. Once iOS12 is out, then Google/Waze will need to finalize their versions for release. May not happen immediately on Apple release.
I am a beta tester for Waze and is nothing for CarPlay yet. There won’t be until the iOS 12 API is made public. I will let you know when I start seeing anything related to CarPlay in Waze. Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
There are different beta programs. It is very possible that some beta testers are testing Waze with CarPlay. Unless it's a public beta program like Apple's, you are not allowed to discuss it or even mention you are part of one.
The usually reliable 9to5 Mac site, https://9to5mac.com, is reporting that both Waze and Google Maps are testing their CarPlay implementation. Shipping date is unknown.
Was going to post something similar, as I've done other beta tests. Confidentiality agreements prohibit any discussion or mention of any features out or about to come out outside of the beta forum. I seriously doubt Waze beta would be any different. There is a Waze beta program here: https://waze.centercode.com/welcome/ If I were part of the beta program, more than likely I would not be able to comment on being there a gag order.
Google maps and Waze are still in beta. Once those apps are released with their CarPlay version, no config on Honda’s side is necessary.
Hurry, Google, Hurry! Apple Maps on CarPlay just cheerfully directed me to go the wrong way on a one-way street.
