Hondalink refresh rate

    How often does everyone's hondalink update the battery amount while charging? I'm seeing anywhere from 1 to over 2 hours

    Exactly what I’m getting. Since it’s free and Honda has to pay for the cellular bandwidth and server, we can’t realistically expect instant updates.
     
  4. I'm seeing the same. I even got this message recently on my iPhone notifications: "Unable to stop charging. The vehicle may be in an area of low signal reception."

    I'd really like to understand what signal is being used to transmit/receive HondaLink data. Sadly I'm in a weak cell zone and I've been wondering if that accounts for some of the delay. Also, the car is in the garage.

    Honda Link is a two way cellular data transmission by way of the Clarity’s TCU (Telematics Control Unit) and the app on your phone. At shutdown you will see TCU and an antenna symbol with signal strength indicators on the Clarity’s DII. Both your phone and the TCU/car need to have a reliable cellular signal to reach the server that Honda is using. Or your phone can have a WiFi signal to reach the server.

  6. That makes sense when I’m in the car.

    However, how is it that I’m in my house (car is in the garage) and I can get updates on the charge status....

    Somehow the car must be transmitting it’s charge status to HondaLink and receiving requests from HondaLink

    While the car is running its every 5-minutes. While the vehicle is charging it’s every 15%. The update increments I’ve personally seen are at 25%, 40%, 55%, 70%, 85%, and full battery. On a level 1 charger I suppose that would be 1-2 hours each. On a level 2 charger it’s more like every 20 minutes or so.

    ManKo, great observation! That’s exactly what I’m seeing with level 1 charging. Thanks, I had not noticed this before. You’ve given us a valuable piece of info that’s not documented in the owner’s manual.

    First time using the hondalink app, I'm charging on level 1 and i'm seeing 95%, says charging 1 hr 10 min until full, but there's only 39 miles EV so far.

    It's been 13 hours since I started charging EV was at 0, now it's only at 39 miles EV, with 1 more hour to go, I will only get 43 miles EV on 14 hours of charging???

    temperature in Los Angeles is around 70s

    is the app accurate?

    You would likely only get 43 mile EV on 2 hours of charging at level 2. That's an estimate. While one can charge the Clarity on 110v, the capacity of the battery makes charging it up from empty a long wait. Plus, you will notice that charge rate drops down as the battery approaches capacity.

    SL, remember that the EV range # is an estimate based primarily on previous efficiency and battery temperature. As such it will fluctuate depending on how many miles you got out of a charge on recent trips and how temperatures affect the battery’s ability to store and delivery charge. So driving habits (rapid accel, rabbit like stops/starts,etc.), driving conditions (hills, rain/snow, high speeds, etc.), non-motive battery drain (heat, a/c, defrost, wipers, lights, etc.), and battery temperature (affects battery’s ability to store/delivery energy) will all affect the EV range for better or worse.

    With little or no non-motive drain during the good weather 40s-60s we’re having in Kentucky now, I’m consistently seeing 56-59 EV range. When temps in Feb we’re down to the 30s at night and 40s daytime it was only in the high 40s EV. Heater and defrost seem to cause the most reduction. Haven’t needed the a/c yet so don’t know about that.

    What were your temps and driving like? A few trips from now you may see a change.

    With nice temps and regular driving most are able to get at least the EPA 47 EV. My EV range is tracking within 1-2 miles of the odometer reading so it’s very accurate for me.

    i just bought the car yesterday and this is my first time charging. It had 10 EV miles when I got it from the dealer, had 0 EV miles when I got home. It finished charging in 14 hrs and indicates 43 EV miles available. It's around 70s-80s here in Los Angeles.

    Aha, brand new w no historical data! Just wait. After a few representative trips/charges you will get a more accurate EV range. Let us know in a week.

    Just know that how fast you drive has an effect as well. I have yet to see above 42 miles ev range on ours, but my wife only uses it to drive to work and back which is 90% 65-70mph on the highway. If you mainly drive on other roads with lower speed limits then you should see a higher number. I don't know when we will see 47 miles or higher. Maybe never. But I understand why so I don't mind.

    The first time I charged my car I only got 36 miles EV range. Now it's been 11 weeks and I routinely get high 40's to low 50's. clarity1.jpg

    There's a TSB (software update) that addresses this issue.
