Hi everyone. New proud owner! I came from a gas guzzling Jeep Grand Cherokee and I'm happy I made the transition.

Quick question. I want to play music using a USB flash drive. What format should it be in? Exfat, NTFS or FAT32?

FAT32. I have one that's 32GB. I have issues from time-to-time where it stops recognizing the USB drive. Just need to reset the Head Unit (hold the Audio button on the upper left corner of the HU for a few seconds and select yes on reboot question) and it works after reboot.

Thank you. That worked. I have a lot of music and looks like there is a 700 folder limit and cant find a way to shuffle all music.

You should see options to shuffle within current folder or in all folders. Not sure about the folder limit or the max size of the USB drive.

That looks nice but since it needs to be formatted FAT32 I think you will only be able to use 32 Gig of the 128 Gig.

Speaking of USBs. Does anyone find it odd that the USB ports are upside down???

At least on my car, the “top” of usb plug in actually needs to be pointed down.

    Bothering my OCD.

Yeah, and why Honda couldn't provide 2-amp USB ports or at least two 1.5-amp ports instead of one 1.5-amp port and one 1.0-amp port. Wait, I figured it out--powerful ports would have reduced the car's EV range (riiiight).

  11. Get a Android phone or tablet that has MicroSD slot and can do Android Auto.
Fill the MicroSD with your music files.
Use Android Auto/Google Music, there are more features from there too.
    Problem solved.

  13. Because USB charging port is not future-proof anyway, in a few years that might become inadequate and you will abandon that port in flavor of car charger using 12V plug again.

10+ years ago we only need 500mA USB port, later we had 1A, and then asked for 2A with fast charging feature.
And now, new phones are using USB 3.1 Type-C port which can support up to 20V.
Also, the wireless charging pad now becomes more common.

In fact, I have been using phones supporting Qi wireless charging for 5 years, I even homemade a wireless charging clamp for car using the 12V plug

I have one of these plugged into a USB port in my wife’s 2016 Pilot. It’s formatted FAT32 and has the whole capacity available. The aggravating part is Honda’s infotainment system in that car limits the size of individual music files so that some are too big to play. The system also resets to the first song anytime you turn the car off while connected to it. Picks up where it left off only if you change the source before shutting the car off and then pick it as source again when you restart.

I like the Clarity system somewhat better. It seems to play nice with my old Gen 3 iPod.

Just an update on this. USB drive playback was not smooth. With over 700 folders and over 10,000 songs, the head unit lagged in all of its functions. Plus, when you start the car, it would take a few minutes for playback to resume. Good news here is that it played the last song you listened to.

Using Media Monkey, I restructured my file folders to show Artist Name in a folder with just their respective songs in the folder...no subfolders for Album. I renamed the song file as "Album - Track # - Song Title". Now I have less than 700 folders. Works much better now. Loads quicker, no head unit lag. One quirk I do not like is when you browse through the folders, selecting a folder automatically starts playing songs in that folder....you cannot just browse.

I'm sure CarPlay or Android Auto has a better user experience, but maybe it's just me, I just feel the sound quality is better coming from a USB drive.

Last thing...has anyone got Song by Voice to work? Each time I try it, I get a message that states "Generating Voice Recognition Commands" and then it cycles back to the beginning. I cannot get any Song Commands to work.

FAT32 means 32 bits, not 32 GB. FAT32 can make a 16 TB filesystem with 4k "sectors", you just have to not use artificially-limited Microsoft tools to format it. Even Windows will read and write from one that's been appropriately formatted, so I expect the car wouldn't have problems with the size alone.

Congrats. I agree that sound quality is better coming from the USB drive but have not try Song by Voice. The annoying thing for me is the random function. It will play the last song before you turned off but then it starts back at the beginning, playing the same sequence all over again.

Playback is finicky for me, as well. Some mp3's will stop mid-stream. I can often replay them in full. Mostly, the bulit-in player works, and the mp3's are sorted into Root -> Artist --> Album --> song1.mp3 ... I did have the unrecognized / unsupported file error issue. Reformatted to FAT32 (again) 4096 Bytes unit allocation size, and it's all good. Used the following SanDisk and the USB cover closes completely --

    Attached Files:

  19. FAT 32 can do up to 16TB (terabytes) On some OS it can only do up to 2TB, but still 128GB it isn't even breaking a sweat.

Nope, that limitation no longer holds true.

  21. Has anyone tried to mod the kernel or other system settings?

That is correct. I use a 64GB formatted FAT32 with an utility I downloaded. It works fine except it is annoying when you have too many nested folders. Subfolders are of no use.

USB would give you better sound quality than bluetooth, but definitely not a difference when using CarPlay or Android Auto.
