When I run my car in regen mode (that is, to recharge the battery while I'm driving), when I get out of the car I smell something, almost like a burning smell. It's fairly strong, although I can't say for sure that it's a "burning smell"... just something like that. I've only run it in this mode twice so maybe it's the kind of thing that disappears after a while. Has anyone else experienced this?

I've only run HV recharge mode on the freeway, but the first time was after having the Clarity for a few months (well broken in, with hundreds of miles in HV already). No, I didn't notice any odor of any kind.

Just want to clarify for future reference: I don't smell anything when I'm inside the car, only when I step outside immediately after shutting it off. Not sure how clear I was about that.

Thanks for the clarification. Each recharge was on the freeway so by the time I got out next, it was long over so no smell detected even if there was one. Sorry, I couldn't be more helpful.

Maybe oil burning off the exhaust?

Driving in HV Charge mode on the freeway last night, a burning odor of rubber and electronics came into the cabin.

I opened the windows and got fresh air but when I closed it, the odor came back.
Thought maybe carbon monoxide when I first smelled it but then CO is odorless....

    Anyone else ?

Do you mean you enable regen when you are driving? How can you do that? Regen only happens when your vehicle is losing speed. Regen is deactivated when you keep accelerating for probably about 10 seconds. I have never tried but I think the only possible way is to set regen while you are coasting then set it to a fixed speed. Regen should only happen when you are coasting or braking, because there's energy loss when you do regen. You should better keep your fuel in the form of gas than pushing for regen.

I think you threw some off by calling it regen while driving mode. It actually HV Charge Mode. If it was the first time you ran it, it’s probably the heat burning off some oil or manufacturing residue, or liberating volatiles from the brand new plastics on or near the engine. If it persists, I would check for an oil or fluid leak or rarely a misaligned part too close to the exhaust. I’m betting it will go away after a few start ups. Mine only did this for just a short time only once.

No it's not regen - it's when I enable HV Charge (press HV button twice - second time hold a second) while on the freeway at high speed when the battery level drops to near empty.

I'm sure the "regen mode" @ClarityMark mentioned was what Honda calls HV CHARGE Mode.

Yes, this was it - first time using the HV Charge mode - the smell alarmed me for a bit when I thought the car would catch on fire in the middle of the freeway - what a scary vision!

Thanks for letting us know that it's temporary....

You don't have to press the HV button twice, one long press will invoke HV CHARGE Mode.

I haven't got my charging cable yet, I use HV mode all the time, so it is not a common defect.

  17. I just had a similar experience. Turned windshield defrosters (front and rear) on full high heat and engaged HV charge. Could smell a burning rubberish smell after a few minutes (car was stationary the whole time). This isnt my first time using HV charge but i haven’t used it regularly- maybe only 10 minutes or so before this occurance
