Although all the doors lock normally the trunk stays unlocked. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Is this permanent or a one-time phenomenon? There are at least 5 ways to lock a Clarity (walk-away, fob button, exterior door button, interior door button, key). Which did you use and did you try the others? If you can account for both of your fobs and none of these methods will lock the trunk, I suspect it's broken.
If the key fob is near the car the trunk will open. Have someone walk away with the fob. Then see if you can open the trunk
Thanks, Steven B. and Insightman! Your comments got me thinking about where my wife’s fob was in the house. Turned out it was near to an exterior wall that’s part of the carport. The car was backed in and so the trunk was in range of her fob! Problem solved.
That is great problem solving. I had to laugh at that. Reminds me of my first time washing the car, and whenever I tried scrubbing near the front door handles the car would beep and unlock, and I couldn't figure out why until I saw that the key fob had been placed a few feet away because I didn't want it to get wet. It is something to be aware of if you happen to park your car right outside your wall, only to discover that the car never truly locks!
You know this could be a revelation for anyone who has a 'carport' (not an enclosed garage) and they hang their keys just inside the door of the house. Your car isn't really locked if your fob stays within range. Better to turn that feature off in that case.
OK, this thread made me test this since I keep the spare key fob on a key rack on utility room wall that is the back (front bumper) inside wall of the garage. Left it there and left my fob in bedroom. Went to car and still locked. Took second fob to garage (with a tape measure) and placed it on a shelf directly over front bumper-still locked when tried door handle. Tried 6 ft from driver’s door handle- still wouldnt unlock. Only when I moved it to within 5 ft of handle was I able to unlock the door. Now tested how far away fob had to be for car to give the beep and flash of a successful auto lock. At 45 degrees from front bumper, I consistently got the lock at 4 1/2 to just under 5 ft. Only had less than 4 ft straight on from front bumper to wall to test but it wouldn’t relock at that distance. So based on my measurements, if your fob is more than 6 ft from the car you should be ok. Conditions: Fob batteries are the ones that came w the car in Feb and my vin ends in the 1600s. And this is auto without pressing the fob lock/ unlock buttons (which work at longer distances). Hope this helps.
Put your fobs in one of these faraday bags and you'll also protect yourself against thieves who use a relay attack to drive off with your car. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Car-Keyless-Key-Entry-Fob-Guard-Signal-Blocker-Faraday-Bag-Theft-Prevention-Case/382408551191?hash=item5909536b17%3Am%3AmHs0A094ZPLBqeuhABeptYw&var=651176924304
