They also say to have the car plugged in for preconditioning. Let’s say you set a charging window during off peak hours from like 12am-7am even though you leave at 6am. Then you set preconditioning for 6am. If the car were to try to get to 100% at 7:00, you might be around 80% at 6:00 give or take. However I suspect what happens is it attempts to fully charge by the 6:00. Therefore one probably needs to wake up in the middle of the night to go outside and unplug it. Then go outside again to plug it in before preconditioning. Is there literally any way to do it?
That's outright false information. The only battery conditioning comes from using the battery, either through charging or driving. The only way climatization (erroneously referred to as preconditioning) warms up the batteries is by draining (using) them and/or causing charging to occur to compensate for climatization draw.
I think we had a discussion like this before, but my take is that BMW Corporate decided to reduce the risk of battery warranty claims and revised the manual. Now owners will be projected to reach 71% max capacity in the warranty period and not qualify for a battery replacement!
I'd think a good lawyer would be able to win a claim since the SE offers no way to control the charge.
So you have two choices. 1. Charge the battery every day to 100% and hope the battery degrades to the point where it needs replacing. 2. Baby the battery and try to keep it healthy enough to outlast the warranty. I choose #1. The battery won't last forever, and if you even have the car after 8 years and 100k miles, the battery will eventually need to be replaced anyway. Besides, I think that EV's could be dramatically better in the next 8 years. I plan to charge and enjoy.
3. Don't wait for the battery to need replacing. Replace it as soon as the smaller, 100-lb, 100 kWh, solid-state aftermarket batteries are available. They should be here sometime next year, right? Wait. Maybe that's when the long-awaited BTTF Flux Capacitors are supposed to be coming out.
We've all been waiting since Oct 19, 2016 for FSD! Meanwhile Tesla has $2.913bn in deferred revenue as of Dec 31, 2022, but already spent the cash. Some $1.131bn was added in the 2022 year. Let's say out of the 1.369 million Teslas delivered, about 100,000 signed up for FSD so the uptake is around 7.3%. As for the CyberTruck we have to wait for a post-apocalyptic environment to be in style...so like 2050 ala Mad Max: Fury Road.

You would, of course, lose money that way, especially if prices on the original SE drop more due to greater range in Chinese-built version. But, money isn't everything, so it is an option. I'm very glad that I was able to buy an SE now at my value-point despite the loss of the tax credit, but would certainly be willing to "upgrade" to the 2nd generation if fits my criteria.
