Service due?

I've been getting service alerts from the dealership where I bought my Clarity, and now the email is saying service is overdue. This was not stated as an estimate, but rather a large, bold message as a statement of fact. However, the car is telling me that I still have several thousand miles before the first service.

I just got off the phone with HondaCare and they confirmed that the maintenance minder in the car is indeed the only factory required service. I'm just posting this as a caution to others since, gullible person that I am, I had fallen for this type of alert from Toyota for several years before realizing that they were overstating the service requirements for my Prius v.

As I posted in a thread a couple of months ago - I think one of the reasons our vehicles (before the Clarity) are 1998, 1998, 2002 and 2005 is because I really hate interacting with dealerships and sales people.

I would not give that unscrupulous dealer any of my business or hard earned money! If they’ll lie about that, you have to wonder what else they’ll lie and cheat you on.

I think that is why they are going to more computer recommend maintenance minders, to get away from dealers over selling maintenance items.

The car will let you know when service is due and it will also get more assertive if you ignore it. I think after 1000 miles past it said service was due now.

My dealer did me the favor of scheduling my first service visit 4 months after delivery, and the hondalink kept sending me reminder messages. I promptly canceled the appointments and will be following the maintenance minder schedule.

For those of you with the engine hour monitors in place, we will all be curious to know what that reads when the MM says maintenance is due. Not only for this first one, but for the second one also. The dealer said the second one should be around 10k later, but again, that is odometer miles and not engine miles.

Why is the first one so soon when it should be every 10,000 miles?

    My hunch is tire rotation.

Maybe I should get the tires rotated on my Leaf more than the one time a year I bring it to the dealer. I haven't had any problems in 5 years, though.

We are at 11,000 miles so will see if the second service pops up in the next month or two, if it says to change the oil I won't do it as it has only maybe 40 gallons of gas burned with the current oil (seems like 200 gallons burned would be reasonable).

Just a little friendly advice - I would imagine the diagnostics will be tracking how long the car has been giving you the service reminder, and how far past it you brought it in for the service. From there, if problems arise in the future, you'll be in that dreaded - "not covered by warranty for failure to service as required" land and having to fight over warranty repairs. NOT a pleasant place to be for saving a few hundred dollars in maintenance charges.

I did read on a Honda source that the Maintenance Minder will move up some items to coincide with the tire rotation/inspection to reduce number of service calls and trips to dealer.

I have an hour meter installed and I’m at less than 2 hours and 2 gal of gas used, and at 3 months/~2,000 miles the MM started showing first service in 8 months.
