    I ordered the base model.
We don't have a smartphone to leave in the car as a navigational device and the one that needs navigation most does not have one.

Running a Garmin right now. Voice recognition is horrible but otherwise it does a very good job and I don't know the mounting options in the Clarity.

    Anyone have solutions?

Get a cheap Android phone for the person that doesn't have one seems like a reasonable option. Then they can plug it in and use Android Auto for navigation and everything else. Or an iphone. No mounting of a separate device necessary.

Before we bought the Clarity I wasn't interested in the in dash map systems. 1) They can be expensive to update new maps. Fortunately the Clarity comes with 5 years of updates. 2) They don't let you do many things while the car is in motion. This makes sense for the driver but what about the passenger. I find this irritating.

We've used garmin dash mount units for years. The sand-bag type of holder works great.

Does that mean a $400/year data plan?

I have that type. The sandbag needs to be redone so it grips the dash again. Hoping for something less intrusive than those wires and it maybe moving around.

Many Garmins come with lifetime maps and traffic.

I use my phone as a hotspot. You get all the lastest charging stations on the navigation screen.

I have that but am looking for alternatives, I prefer not to have the power cort and unit on my dash and dont want to take the dash apart to hide wires.

    data charges?

Yeah, a cheap Android phone plugged into USB + Android Auto should do the trick. Unless you need traffic you can use the phone without a plan and just update the maps over Wifi at home; Google Maps will work offline as long as you download your home area on WiFi. If you start navigating anywhere within WiFi range you'll also have traffic for that trip - although of course it won't update w/o access to data.

If you want live traffic all the time, you can probably find a dirt-cheap plan from Ting or TracFone or someone like that that will take care of all your data usage - Google Maps doesn't use very much data (I use it a lot and according to my phone I've used an average of 250 MB/month).

I have the unlimited from T-Mobile. 20G of hotspot per month.

    Looking for $0
Curious: does the Navigation that comes with the touring edition have data charges associated to it?

No data charges and some have posted we get free updates for 5 years.

One option is to buy an old android phone, download the maps over wifi to the Google maps app and you will have navigation without a cellular data plan.

Another option for Android (not sure about iPhone) is to download the 'Here WeGo' gps app. It used to belong to Nokia and then Microsoft. It is pretty good for both online and offline map and it is world wide, meaning you can download map for almost the whole world (great for travelling). When you use it online (either wifi hotspot or cell), it will provide traffic data but once you download the map data on your phone, you can use it offline just like the old style standalone GPS like Garmin

If you really, really don't want to pay anything for data and need traffic, you might be able to get away with using FreedomPop and an old phone; I think the limit is 500 MB/month, which would cover your Google Maps or Waze usage but probably not much else (i.e. music streaming would be right out).

I will have to try a couple of those solutions our really soon.
I know Google maps is an issue, the maps have to be refreshed every 30 days and coverage is limited so if you are far away no maps for you unless you do a lot of planning.

If you are brave enough, you can hack the system and install locally an app ( the system is Android):

I did enter the debugging mode (which works), but did hack further...
