Gary.....are you still getting less than 40 miles on a full charge ??

  4. Range will fluctuate for lots of reasons -- weather (cold, rain, wind), driving style, and terrain, among them. Can you say more about any of these factors?
If it's cold where you are, 35 miles seems pretty good.

I am getting 37 miles maximum now ,I did some research it is really depend on you driving condition , as for me I am driving on a freeway on a daily basis with the average speed of 65 to 75 miles/hr on EV eco mode with ac running on eco setting, thanks Dominick you are right. I like the prime so much, on a Hybrid sports mode it is a different car it accelerate so fast specially on a free way that make Honda civic type R struggling to keep up on me.

  6. Ok, that makes sense. The faster you go, the more energy it takes, so that's why your range will be lower in this driving pattern. If it's chilly, you may see an improvement when it warms up (though, when it gets really hot, air conditioning can also ding range a bit).

  8. The Prime's computer looks at a lot of things to give you your estimated EV range. It's normal to have the first several charge cycles in the 30 something range.
I'm up to 44 after several charge cycles. Of course cold weather and interstate speeds will impact the range.

I got my RAV4 Prime in July and only got 35 EV range after the first overnight charge. The range increased to 42 miles after a few days of driving and more overnight charges. Surprisingly, the EV range has continued to gradually increase and is currently at 51 miles (with AC) or 53 miles (without AC). Being in Honolulu, Hawaii, I always drive with the AC on. I can’t explain why the estimated range is so much higher than the rated range of 42.

Let me guess. Most of your driving is in traffic and little of your driving is above 60mph. The estimated range is based on optimal temperatures (which you have in spades) and mixed speeds. With you driving in stop and go traffic you will beat the estimated ranges. You probably are easy on the go pedal too. Please review your car for us. I am hoping that next year you will find me in a Rav4P.

I bought my SE 2 weeks ago, estimated range after full overnight charge had been 33 miles. I joined this forum to see if this is normal.
It has been below 30 degrees every day, so I assume that is normal? My commute is 25 mostly highway miles and with heat on ECO mode. I have been getting right around 30 miles/ charge. Hoping it improves when it warms up.

  13. It should improve after several charges, see the prior posts in this thread for some good insight..

  14. I drive a Honda Clarity, but just want to throw in that low temperatures (below 40 F) drastically reduce our battery range, it’s probably the same in the RAV. Wait until summer and see what you get then - the manufacturer’s range rating is never a “cold” rating.

I get 40-42 miles per charge. Mostly this is because my battery use is all local, where I can take advantage of the regenerative capabilities. That said, I live in the mountains, so I see a HUGE variability, depending on whether I'm going uphill or downhill. For those conditions I get from about 30-55 miles per charge.

I'm also calculating my true MPG in hybrid mode. (Toyota's value from the vehicle is inflated by including the EV miles.) I'm getting right around 30 MPG in hybrid mode. Anyone else calculating this?

You're kidding, right? You're saying I'm only going to get 30 mpg when I buy a Rav4 Prime or Prius Prime when it's using gas? Forget it. I was told the Rav4 Prime was 41 mpg or more than that in gas mode and the Prius Prime even better, and this is without counting using the EV power until it runs out. Did I misread you?

    Two things:
    1. The Prius Prime is a totally different vehicle than the RAV4 Prime. I have no experience with the Prius Prime, but think it's smaller size and engine would result in much better mileage than the RAV4 Prime.
    2. I should qualify my RAV 4 numbers by saying my evidence so far is limited. I've got over 2400 miles in, but still haven't finished my third tank of gas yet. So, better numbers are going to take at least six months. I'm guessing, again based on this limited evidence, that my HV mileage will be in the 32-36 MPG range. I'm happy with that. This is a bigger and more powerful vehicle than my previous vehicle, a Subaru Forester, but gets about 10 MPG better.

I'm still delighted with the RAV4 Prime. More than half my miles have been on battery. I've got over 1000 miles on this tank and I'm only 3/4 down on my gas tank; it's been two months since my last fillup, so this is achieving my objective of reducing carbon emissions.

I had not read the other posts when I replied to BobB and would have liked to remove that post I wrote but can't because there's no edit function. It looks like they hide the edit function after a while. I know I had edited that post to not say "Forget it" but to be more clear what I meant was that I might forget buying one, but the edit I made isn't in the page and I can't go back and delete the post due to the unfortunate practice of not letting you edit after a couple of minutes.

An update on my EV range:
Like others, my range has increased over time, but it's unclear why. It could be due to warmer spring weather or to the vehicle learning that I have a light foot on the accelerator and that my local driving, with lots of regeneration, helps retain the charge. I'm currently at 49 miles after each battery recharge.

The other measure the vehicle provides is the miles per kWh. That should correspond directly to the miles per charge. I'm currently showing 2.9, but think it's higher than that. I'll reset that when I refuel, so I get a more accurate reading.

  20. Warming weather certainly has a positive effect! Great to see you can exceed the 42-mile range by so much. Especially in the mountains.

I live in Honolulu and got my XSE last July. I initially got EV range in the 30’s, but it quickly increased to 40’s, and now I get 51 (with AC) or 55 (no AC). I have driven less than 4,000 miles and used only about 3-4 gals of gas so far, but need to use more to avoid having stale gas issues. Toyota recommends filling at least 5 gals per year.

I had these questions too initially when my Prime used to show 34 on a full charge.. 3 weeks into using my Prime SE, the EV shows me 50 miles of range without AC and 48 with AC. I mostly drive in the speed limits of 40 mph in the town backroads, and 70 on the freeway. I never use Eco mode but the AC runs on Eco.
