I had a Curt hitch installed on my 2021 Kona EV at langley uhaul today for only $212 CAD this morning and that includes the hitch, labour, taxes and a $5warranty. Also a installed a ccm platform bike rack that i bought from canadian tire. It was on sale for $280. Seems fine but causes the reverse warning when i backup.

The rear sensors have been known to cause proximity warnings and can be shut off by pushing the P button in the center console (blue light off) when reversing.;)

So I'm in the US and am debating back and forth whether to do the install myself or see if I can get U-Haul to do it for me. For those of you that had the hitch installed for you, did you have to do a lot of hand-holding and cajoling with the installer to get them to do it or did they just say "sure" and have at it? Mine's a 2020 BTW, one month old.

I used an installer here in Oregon and it was also super easy and inexpensive ( $150). I took in a bunch of photos I had printed from Dag’s detailed posts but the installer said it was a routine install and they didn’t need the photos. Certainly no hand holding required. That was last year and it’s been fine for my bike rack.

  8. Same here would love to do this but as you pointed out seems like dealers like low hanging fruit and are all too eager to claim any electrical modifications as potential warranty denial. I have my dealer try to blame my dying 12V battery on my dashcam(has its own 12V battery not connected to the car) and a intermittent no start condition on my aftermarket HIDs which actually ended up being a dealer damaged wiring harness when they swapped my traction motor.

I had the Uhaul hitch installed by Uhaul and I don’t see any reason it woul be a problem. My car has been in for service and they’ve not said boo about it.

I'm not concerned about that. I bought the car (it's not a lease) and I don't see putting a hitch on as a warranty-breaker. My only issue is whether the installers know what they are doing since the hitch everyone is putting on is approved for the ICE Kona but specifically excludes the EV. As people have noted in this thread, there is a bit of customization required so I just want to feel comfortable that the installers don't mess something up. It sounds like it's a non-issue, and after reading everyone's installation notes and looking underneath today, I was microns away from doing it myself, since it seems pretty straightforward. But RP's comment about U-Haul doing it easily and about the lifetime warranty for the hitch convinced me to leave it to the pro's....

I think it does depend on the experience of the UHaul installers... the place I went did have some challenges lining up the holes, but once the manager was involved, it was rock solid when I left. The bumper cover has a little bump where the hitch comes out, but its basically underneath and I’d rather not have them cutting stuff to make it fit.

  14. I installed my hitch myself, purchased from etrailer.com, but it took me a long time (best part of a Saturday) and I lost one of the bolts that had to be pulled through the frame on a wire. I ended up taking it to my independent mechanic to fix it up, and wish I would have done that to begin with. No complaints from the dealer when I have been in for recall work.

We are here in Sonoma and had a hitch installed by the U-Haul in Santa Rosa. They ordered the hitch for us and installed it, all for $250 total plus the $5. for warranty. The installer had to do some finagling to get the bolt lined up with the hitch
Works great for our bike rack. Installed about 4 months ago.

Thanks Mia - did they have to make a few cuts in the splash guard underneath? From what I can tell it looks like that's required but was curious if they had any problems doing so.

There are no cuts to the plastic... Our Hyundai dealer was willing to order one and install for $550! It was $250 just for the labor. That is why i went to U-Haul as they do installs on a daily basis. I believe the second pic is the upc for the hitch. kona 2020 ultimate ev trailer hitch.jpg upc uhaul hitch..jpg From what I gather on this forum, there are a couple of different hitchs that work. I do believe that the year matters, as the one for the 2018 was not the same as the 2019 or the 2020. Good Luck

  18. Hi, and thx for the info. Please clarify that the hitch you had installed was the round tube type (as per the first photo) and Not the square tube type in the installation diagram...
    Thx.

I'm interested to know how they got it through the splash guard without cutting it. Did they just leave it off? That does not look like any of the other installs I have seen on here and it does not appear to match up with the underside of my 2020 (albeit mine is a Limited though I don't think that makes a difference).

  21. It is not a round tube, it is a square tube. This is the hitch, by Curt, but supplied by U-Haul.

And yes, U-Haul had to cut some plastic for the install. Did a really nice job. And very cheap, incl a lifetime warranty. Start reading at post #32 for all the details.

I had another thread on here about hauling a small utility trifler up to 2000 lbs. There is a concern that it might void the warranty. I'm not worried about that . Has anyone use a utility trailer to haul soil and garden scraps to the dump. I would only be doing that up to 4 times a year at the most
