I was able to take delivery on a Glacier Silver Metallic XC 40 Recharge from Dyer & Dyer Volvo in Atlanta yesterday, December 31.

Saw it Wednesday, drove it, and made the deal. I was able to get about $3500 off MSRP.

Love it so far (only 7 miles driving) and impressed by the performance as well as the fit and finish. This car replaces a Honda Clarity with 17,000 miles.

The thing I can’t figure out is how to get CarPlay and Sirius XM loaded. Volvo On Call rep doesn’t know either. If any of you get a Recharge (Google OS for entertainment and maps) and can find out what to do, please post.

BTW, I’d previously ordered one through the Volvo website and paid the $1000 deposit, but had not gotten a delivery date. I was able to cancel it and will have the deposit returned.

  4. Very impressive looking car, congratulations. Look forward to your reviews, I anticipate you will probably shatter that 208 mile range estimate with that huge 78 kWh pack :)

I’ll happy to post the range when I get down to 10% or so.

  8. I read a CNET review yesterday that included a video of all available apps to add from the Volvo Android store. The author said there are only 25 apps available at this time. I am also interested in Sirius XM. The original Volvo marketing material from a year ago specifically said Sirius XM was included. The introduction by Volvo also said free electricity for a year thru a refund after a year. Were you offered the free electricity?

There's been no mention in the paperwork I've gotten, but I've seen it in the marketing into video as well. They've been offering it for the PHEVs, so expect they'll extend the offer.

    Good for you.
    Still I'm waiting mine.

  11. Thanks for sharing, this is so great to see! I really like the XC40 Recharge and it's nice to see you could get that much off MSRP.
I hope you'll consider sharing more of your ownership experience here.

So, after 10 days of ownership, here are some observations:
    1. It’s harder than it should be to learn about the car’s functions. As far as I can see, there’s neither a .pdf nor printed owner’s manual, and the app and web manual are pretty sparse in details and almost no drawings.
    2. Volvo on Call app doesn’t work yet, so there’s no way to remotely manage the car’s functions such as preconditioning.
    3. There are a lot of YouTube reviews. One of the most complete is from Mike’s CarInfo and it’s here:
    4. Both the seat and steering wheel heaters work really well and can be controlled via voice commands.
    5. Google Maps and the Google infotainment system are great.
    6. The driving experience is super. An outrageous amount of torque which leads to neck-snapping acceleration.
    7. Pilot Assist steering seems a little twitchy, but the adaptive cruise works really well, even in city driving.
    8. The Clean Zone feature in the climate control system detects air pollution and automatically switches to recirculate and back when needed.
    9. It’s very solid and seems well built. Also looks bigger in the garage than I thought it would.
    10. So far it’s everything I’d hoped except for the missing SiriusXM radio, Apple CarPlay and Volvo on Call features. Hope those come soon.

I have one on order. What type of charging system did you install on your home? Amp and voltage.

I test drove one yesterday. I have a Kona EV now, and this feels like a completely different beast.
If I told the dealership I wanted one, I could have one they are receiving in March.

I'm super torn. It definitely feels like it isn't quite done from the SW side.
Car Play / Android Auto -- not working yet, coming in an update
Volvo On Call -- not working yet, coming in an update
Sirius XM -- not working yet, coming in an upate
HD Radio -- not present !?!
So then I start thinking about what else isn't working...

Have you tethered it to your phone or home wifi to try some other apps?
Have you tried the Spotify App? I'm really curious as to whether you can download songs for offline listening with it.

I agree that the software in the Infotainment system isn’t baked yet, but am confident it will be.

In the meantime, there are enough Android apps to provide content. I have TuneIn, iHeart Radio, Spotify installed and all work fine, synching with the apps on my devices for favorites, etc. So far, so good. Music from my iPhone plays through the Bluetooth app in the car. I’m impatient for them to complete the software suite, but would much rather have the car to drive with what’s there than wait until everything’s complete. I’ve opened a case with Volvo support for these issues and have been assured they’re working on them, especially the lack of Volvo On Call support.

Not sure if there’s a way to download content for offline listening, but there seems to be plenty of storage in the system to accommodate that.

    Good to hear!
One other thing I hope they add in the future is updates to the dashboard display (though the steering wheel). The one in the Recharge seems to be missing some things. Navigation works great, but you can't display audio or other things that you can on other Volvos.

I'm going to do my own 80mph range test (using kWh/ 100 miles rather than SoC -- which is another pet peeve, I'd rather see miles/kWh -- a number that gets higher with more range, rather than a number that gets lower with more range).
If the range doesn't fall off a cliff at 80mph, then I'll probably get one.

I do agree with enhancements to the dashboard display. The map view is less useful than I thought it would be, especially since the center screen is so big (for the overview) and turn-by-turn directions are given in the middle of the dash display for navigation. The overhead view of the car is useless in my view. I use the “Calm” view almost all the time, and there’s a lot of unused real estate there.

As far as SoC, I hope that they will show miles remaining all the time in a future update (or at least make it optional). As it is, miles remaining only shows when the SoC goes below 25%, which is better than nothing obviously, but why not all the time. Doing the math for miles remaining when I charged to 90% and am now at 70% (and it’s now winter, so range is more limited) seems to be a needless distraction when the car knows what range remaining is at all times. Let’s just display it!

These are all high-class gripes, and easily solved with software. This is my two week mark (about 300 miles) and I’m in love with the car in spite of the gripes. It’s crazy fast, solid, has good enough range for my use case, is really quiet, and has a nice ride.

I did have the dealership change out the 20” wheels and tires for 19” Michelins (50-series) because of the extra sidewall on the 50-series tires. This helps the ride by providing more shock absorption than the slimmer 20” (40 and 45s), and I’m really pleased with this change. Saved $800, too.

  20. One question....is there a battery pack temperature display of some sort?

There’s not. No indication of battery pack temperature.

Can you check the charging cable spec which is included?
Also, are they coming with NEMA 14-50 type plug?

Just wonder if I need to buy charger or not. I just install NEMA 14-50 plug in my Gurage, but didn't buy a charger yet.
If they can use 240V/16A with included charging cable, this can give 3.8kW around. (Maybe little less)
But that mean, this charger can handle most of distance of my normal days.
