Based on reviews, Musk delivered on the promise: you won't be able to buy a better car for the money. If your need is a car you may not be able to buy a better car for the money period and if it is better it's probably a Tesla. Tesla has a car that even in stripped form is the best car on the market and this is the middle of the market. If this is the scaled down S, the scaled down X will very likely do the same.

In concrete terms this is a better car than Camry, Accord, BMW 3 Series and certainly better than Focus and Malibu also better than Sonata. This car also has unheard of demand. And production seems to be coming along nicely- remember Tesla is still well ahead of the original production curve- the 2x speed up of schedule was just in response to more than double the demand on announcement of the car. No auto maker has had this problem ever.

Car and Driver might be the last review coming, but there is enough data to conclude its mission accomplished. The point is proven. This is a better performing, much lower cost over all, much more reliable tech (won't break down on side of road as often as ICE- actual reliability measure) that will be a more durable car than anything a hybrid or PHEV or certainly hydrogen will be able to offer.

Give those technologies a decade and they won't match it. This car also includes a much higher level of technology than any of those cars. The only car on the market that is actually ready for sharing electric autonomy (save for pending software and regulatory approval) backed by the only brand that isn't Chinese that won't have to cannibalize itself to compete. You can even get better insurance. And its lower emissions and ready to set up owners to cut the pump cord at home. Model S and Model X dominate the top end, and this looks set to do the same in the middle of the market, and low end is next. These cars will also be produced with more green energy

The hybrid and ICE disadvantage even on reliability is insurmountable.
Even FCA could produce an electric more reliable than the most reliable ICE power trains ever produced, maybe tech from the 70 years into future might allow an ICE to run as reliably but it would probably have to be a self healing machine.

Low end may be coming, but not from Tesla.

Its a better car even if you pay $35K for it. And at that price it will have a lower cost of ownership. You want to beat it on cost of ownership you have to go to a Honda Civic which I think is still a stretch and unlikely. But the cost will come down further. Pretty much its already unbeatable by ICE even at the mid level with total cost of ownership.

Before you make claims about the model 3 being better than an Accord or Camery, I have to ask if you have sat in either the Honda or Toyota? The build quality on both the Accord and Camery are on a much higher level than the model 3, I'd say the S as well. Yes i have sat and driven rhe Tesla's. I know and appreciate what Tesla is doing to the auto industry but it is far behind on build quality and being able to reliably produce vehicles, ounce you look at it from an unbiased point of view. Don't know why so many are afraid to admit this, either ignorance or blind fanboy following.

Just different classes of vehicles. People that buy an Accord or Camry are not necessarily looking for sports car performance and ride. The Camry is a very comfortable cruiser with a smooth ride.

That said, my preference would be the Model 3 and I do think it’s a better car.

After posting this, I came across this 2018 Camry review that reiterates this view:

“if excitement is what you're looking for, you're not going to shop for a Camry.”

Agreed Model 3 is better but as good a maker as Toyota is the Camry is now based on obsolete technology. You can have a Model 3 on in the garage with the door closed, try that with the engine turning over on a Camry- predictable result. ICE Camrys should be banned.

Also Arstechnica is a crap mag, always had been, total highest bidder piece of crap paid to lie shill rag type stuff.
What are they doing reviewing a Camry anyway? And such a stupid name, it ain't Principia Mathetica its Metalica which is beyond stupid
Germany uber alles junk and the ars part is "is we is or is we ain't going to get our prison" level of stuff. But even when they covered nothing but PCs and consoles you could count on them to put out lie after lie after lie because they were paid to do it.

I have had an Accord and Camrys and they are the best cars I've ever owned so yes I know what you're talking about. But your point is BS.
Do people whine about the quality of Intel chips or Apple phones? Silicon valley has different values than Detroit which is just part of the petrol scam and just like any of the right side corporate welfare petrol scam is about getting subsidized by the USG to the tune of 400 billion a year but still cheaping out the cars so they fail on cue to maximize ill gotten gain for corporate parasites.

Well then make an intelligent statement because so far what you've stated has been beyond ignorant.
