Turn Off VESS (Virtual Engine Sound System)

...and the car is currently charging and I cant figure out how to stop it from charging so the auto charge light will be extinguished . ...

So, there's no auto charge light but there is an Auto light that automatically unlocks the charge plug from the car when the charging has stopped. If the light is out you can only unlock the plug by pressing any door unlock button.
As a side note, with AC charging you normally stop the charge on the car side, avoid just turning off AC power under full tilt. Pressing the door unlock give you 15 seconds to drop the AC or pull the J1772 plug.

 

Naturally, I was gun shy to "pull the plug" that is plugged into the back of the panel in the above photo whilst that panel had a glowing light on one of the buttons, so I waited until charging was complete around 2020 and then proceeded to wire in my VESS momentary switch.

I've set the automatic charge system to tell the system we will use the car every day at 0700 and to only charge between 1900 - 0700 (lowest time of use rates).

I set it up in that manner so all my wife has to do when she comes home is plug the car in and leave it...

...so is there an elegant way I could have interrupted my automatic/time of day charging last evening? Thanks.

 

So, you can press the Auto button anytime during charging or when the car is in Run mode and it will toggle the light and the function. That doesn't affect charging if that was in progress. You use this function purely to continue to secure the cable (Auto = off) should the car be in a public space when AC charging stops.

Pressing the door unlock button on the key fob interrupts charging and unlocks the J1772 plug for 15 seconds. So in that time if you remove the J1772 from the car charging is now stopped. If you don't do anything it will carry on as if nothing happened. You will see on the dash kW reading (AC power in) the result of that unlock-door action. You can also use the inside door unlock button, or the outside button - twice if the car was already unlocked. Hope that's clear.
Some of these nuances are not in the manual.

If the time comes and my wife wants this option, then I'll look at drilling holes in the dash.

Until then, I'm able to tap this button with no fan fare.

It is in line with the starboard edge of the fuse panel access cover, about 10 cm forward of the plastic trim of the lower dash board.

Actually, to be pedantic, I think it's DC power out of the OBC (on-board charger).

 

Made a better video how to disconnect VESS. My new phone has a wide angle lens that made it easier to demonstrate.

 

I have a new Australian 2022 Kona EV Highlander (Premium?) which has reversing beep generated by the VESS module. A very loud beep!
Not looking forward to my son coming home late or backing out of the driveway to start his 3am shift.

Unfortunately the OZ 2022 Kona electric doesn't have a VESS kill switch on the crash panel
Neither are the VESS wires populated in the connector at the back of the switch panel
The connector to the VESS module is also missing the wires (kill and indicator)
The VESS Module seems to have all 8 pins present assuming the bright spots in my blurry phots are pins.
The future is bleak for those who want a quiet car.

 

Check the thread on VESS defeat and see there is a link that shows the hyundai wiring is different from the Kia wiring, but there. Not sure if your newer car is the same

Well, pin 7 is just the light, maybe the switch will still work
Remember that the connection to pin 3 must be momentary, so you cannot simply tie it to ground or it will default to on

 

I have a 2022 Elite. I pulled the plug off the Vess unit forward of the radiator. You can just get your hand in and the clip faces back to the radiator. No more unwanted sounds from the Vess.! No check lights either.
