This is not that strange for two reasons. The factory making the cylindrical cells for Tesla in Japan is part of the five battery manufacturing facilities that will be transferred to the rehashed Panasonic-Toyota JV. And secondly, Toyota always wanted to take advantage of Panasonic-Tesla's low cost/kWh. After the RAV4 EV project, Toyota planned a much higher volume vehicle using Tesla's cost advantage, rumored to be the RX EV, but Musk refused claiming a shortage of batteries.
