My level 2 charger hung from garage ceiling

  1. I am going to reiterate that the location the unit plugs into is not used when the car is charging. The car charges between 10:00pm and 9:00am. If the garage door is going to be used the car will not be plugged in. Because it's on it's way out (or coming home from a party). If I'm taking the Sorento I always unplug the Honda so my wife doesn't have to. Since we got the Honda I only use the Kia for hauling stuff so it pretty much sits there.

The lights run off pull switches. Same scenario. They won't be on if the car is plugged in. I have tested and the only thing (originally) plugged in here was the opener.

I got the chain reset so it pulls the unit hard enough to put a curve in the cable. Keeps the pressure off the plug.

A great idea from KentuckyKen. I still want something better, but this should do until then.

A plastic container that held peanuts or something. (Enlarged the picture: Vanilla Gelato) No metal. No crimping. Slope keeps the cable in place.

And an extra picture for those who know the reference. A work in progress. It will be powder coated and hung on the front of our house. Most people here do cutesy suns, or Aztec figures. Not us.

BTW, see the white wire coming in from the left? The previous owner had two ceiling fans in here (you can see the end of the blade) with the wire stapled to the ceiling and a mass of electrical tape where they met - no wire nuts. A fall project will be repairing them and getting an electrician to wire them properly. You can see the plug for them just to the right of the top of the metal piece. Unplugged. It's interesting that taking the pictures and writing about the fans has got me all hot to trot to just pull it all down. I'm not going to use them until they are wired correctly.

And if you're wondering what that metal piece is hanging on it's a clothesline I set up in the garage since we are not allowed to have one outside (HOA).

Umm, you don't have to worry about that from me. Been using a standup fan and a motorcycle.....

I guess from now on any of us that use the foam support idea should refer to them as KentuckyKen supports :)

Only minor concern is the multi-outlet tap in the ceiling. Probably okay but still a potential weak link, would be better to plug directly into the outlet and then install a smaller tap on the other outlet for the opener and whatever the third item is.

That is indeed a great DIY tip! Much better, in terms of safety and wear-and-tear, than a cable sliding back and forth thru a metal hook.

    Hats off to KentuckyKen!

  6. I like that idea and it is simple to implement. A project for tomorrow. Thanks

Boy, the set ups on this forum are really fancy.

For my old 2012 Prius Plugin, the plug was on the wrong side and at the front of the garage, totally caty cornered from where it needed to be. I plugged it in, dangled a lenghth of cord that I happened to have lying around from one of the garage trusses and tied a small carabiner that I had lying around (family motto "where it drops, it lies"), and ran the charging cord through the carabiner. When it wasn't in use I hung the cord from a bungee cord that I had lying around hooked into a one of the holes in the metal shelving at the front of the garage. I used it that way for six years. Never occurred to me to worry about it.

Now that the charging port on the Clarity is nice and close to the electric plug, I just have the cord in a heap and dump the J1772 in an old plant pot that is lying next to the plug. I put the cover on the end of course. Don't want to get any soil in in it.;)

A valiant attempt, but nobody can equal Rube Goldberg!

  11. I changed my set up today. Thought you all might like to see it. Kept it well supported, and by using screw hooks it is easy to remove when traveling. Two large hooks to loop it over when not using it. Much happier with this.

I noticed my wife left it hanging from the screw hook. I need to remind her to leave it over the double yellow supports.

After all of this Heath Robinson/Rube Goldberg magnificence - which had me laughing like a loon - I feel downright uncreative... Vchg.jpg

No, it's not - the base is toward the garage door. electra.jpg

  16. Is that the same one in the pic with the charger? I was chuckling because it looked like the one I have in my pic and they are hung the opposite way.

You make me want to repaint my garage. That is one beautiful color.

Yup - same 16' ladder, same wall - just before EVSE installation (and frosting the remainder of the window). The color is Behr Marquee "Electra" - it matches my LED doorbell... Once the heat breaks the ceiling will be painted white. doorbell.jpg
