Honda Service Express Bulletins for 2018 Clarity PHEV

    You’re very welcome. The only Canadian SB# I’ve seen posted on the forum is the J-20-18 for the HV range bug.

    Re: 18-097 - I tried contacting my dealer earlier this week to get the software update installed. They told me that they don’t have the ‘part’ and to check back in a week! I frequently run into the issue described in this SB when I plug in at my work location (never at home). I would think that this software update would be something that the dealer could download from Honda? What gives on this?

    It's probably shipped to them in a box of about 80 floppy diskettes. :p

    I brought my Clarity in to the dealer yesterday to have the current update campaign/recall finished (four items including multiple system warning and HV mileage fix). I asked that the charging system software update (SB 18-097) be applied at the same time. I also got back the response (when I pickup up the car) that the "Part is Under Development And Not Available For Sale." I had erased the DTC's that resulted from the charging problems so that may have been a factor. The Service adviser told me that the software update (1C601-5WP-A02) might have been able to be downloaded in a non-standard way but that the dealership would not have been reimbursed for the cost and labor involved). I do not know if there are problems with the charging software or if Honda is becoming more strict in applying non-campaign Service Bulletin updates.

    I think that Honda should add the charging system update to the current update campaign/recall as not being able to reliably use public charging stations can be a pain. It is also a pain to need multiple trips to the dealer to get these fixes completed.

    Dealer tried 3 times to install the update, with it quitting at 90%. They called the Honda help line and apparently some have a sequence you have to do to get the update to take (including opening and closing the door or something). So if your dealer says it's not taking, have them get the guidance from the help line!

    The problems are not with Honda, they’re with crappy dealers. Mine has never had a problem installing any update that I brought to their attention. Based on all the posts on this forum, there are a lot of unscrupulous dealers out there. I’m fortunate to have a good one.

    Here are the codes that came up with my VIN for my first service appointment next week (Canada)

    ManufacturerCampaignId:N44 eVTC and 3-Way Valve Software
    ManufacturerCampaignId:N45 Climate Control Unit Replacement
    ManufacturerCampaignId:N46 Incorrect Vehicle Range Display

    Hope they know how to handle these.

    Includes brake service (A9), which I don't mind as I've had to replace discs twice on other cars due to frozen pads and that's more expensive than maintenance service.

    Did you call the dealer specifically for the bulletins or were you going in for routine maintenance anyways?

    Routine A19 maintenance, booked through the HondaLink app it showed me those items to choose from, which was pretty cool. It did warn me to pick an appointment at least 48 hours out.

    Do we know the reasons for the first two? I think they are 18-089 and 18-090 in the US.

    The CR-V and Civic fuel dilution fix was announced today and the fix is...a new climate control unit + software. Same engine (minus Turbo) and similar fix description.

    Interesting that the solution for the CRV is to ensure the engine heats up as quickly as possible. Might also explain why the Clarity, once the ICE runs, sometimes goes into a cycle of 2-3 runs until the temperature hits a certain value before switching back to full EV (blue bar). It’s protecting itself.

    All fixes were done yesterday with the first maintenance A19, took more than 4 hours at the dealer.

    Yes, those are my exact thoughts. Unless Honda has indicated what problem the climate control unit change fixes, I'm inclined to believe that it is for this issue and that post-change it will siphon off less heat from the ICE for climate control. It's not a fix, but an attempt to reduce the issue at a low cost.

    It looks like CRVs got a warranty extension. Maybe Clarity should too?

    If this is a problem, it would show up as an overfull oil reading (gasoline in the oil adds to oil volume). And the solution is to run the ICE for a long time at highway speeds (not possible in Clarity), or to change oil frequently.

    I'm going to check my oil frequently and change just as much as with an ICE.

    I'm not due for any maintenance yet so I'm wondering if I should call the dealer and ask about service bulletins for my car

    Hmmmm, maybe that’s why the Maintenance Minder has us changing the oil so often; once or twice a day wiping the oil off the dipstick will deplete the oil level. :)

    I checked my VIN and only N44 came up. Are N45 and N46 VIN specific or nationwide?

    OR possibly go the other direction-use heat generated by the electric climate heater to warm the ICE. The Electric Water Valve can send coolant both directions.
