Anyone install any Apps on the Clarity?

Let me know how the factory reset works. I'd be more comfortable playing with this if I had a way to go back safely.

 

Maybe the issue is that you are not using the pro version? There are a few differences and capabilities between the 2 versions. Please also ask about the slowness. I don't think it has anything to do with data connection.

 

I don't think you can tether to another android with cable. I know you tether with usb or bluetooth to laptop.. never had any success tethering to another android other than wifi

 

I'm more thinking that the head unit is under-powered. It doesn't make sense for them to spend more on CPU power than is the minimum to do the functions it was designed for.

 

HU under-powered makes sense since Honda must be losing money on the Clarity. Also, the version of Android is old, you have to use apps compatible with Android 4.x for it to work. Wonder if the Apple Carplay side up-to-date.

 

Since speed is a hard limitation on the HU, I'm going to try rooting my phone and install the hack version of Android Auto. This way, you can run anything through it. I think the Civic uses a Tegra 3 chip so it may be the same one. That would be a lot slower than any current phone.

 

That's not quite how it works. The entire head unit is Android. An Apple carplay server runs via an Android app. There's not a separate side for Apple people.

You are right that it's old. I'm hopeful that the next car I buy will have Android Automotive... Not to be confused with Android Auto.

Wish you hadn't said that. Now I'll blame Android instead of Apple when CarPlay is flakey.

 

I've been having quite a few lost connections with mine. And when it happens and the phone rings, it'll ring in bluetooth mode but when I pick it up using the steering wheel control, the screen says PRIVATE MODE -- and I can't hear the person and I can't do anything to get it back to the car speaker.

 

That happens on my Sonata sometimes. I can switch it back on my phone (Android): in the call screen on my phone there is a Bluetooth icon, which will switch the call back and forth from the in-car hands-free to the handset.

 

Thanks all for great tips and info. hacking the HU makes me nervous. all i wanted is to get official Honda supported apps on my HU. Doesn't look like its possible. correct?

I guess i will just wait for ios12 with waze and google maps support.

Seriously though, I feel you. Blame the head unit manufacturer, Mitsubishi... They chose to adapt a 7 year old open source operating system designed for phones (tablet support didn't even exist for Honeycomb!) to this use... On one hand it's better than most non Android units, but holy cow how about using something that's not so old...

Android Automotive (google supported car OS, not android auto) is the real future of this tech... Android auto in my opinion is a convenient patch until connected cars and capable head units become standard. One can hope!!!
