My niro is waiting at dealer for motor replacement because of this noise. No motors in stock. No ETA. 3 weeks to go until I request a lemon-law buy back.
I think the point electriceddy was trying to make is that if Kia has a revised motor likely Hyundai does as well.
I've escalated the issue to hyundai national. Hopefully they will know more about this issue and at the very least alert hyundai of this problem.
I realize its Niro but the exact noise issue and drive train similar. Sorry about your worsening problem since getting the car back with new reducer gear box, however on the bright side maybe they will figure out that the motor is the culprit after all. Another thing I have a hard time understanding is why can't the car be driven while the motor is on order. Why must the car gather dust on a lot when the problem does't appear to be a safety issue - just noise?
When I went back to report the noise to the dealer, the mechanic was already gone for the day. I was going to ask what harm this would cause. Other people reported the gearbox having metal shavings in it. So I assume driving the vehicle with this misalignment causes damage to the gears, motor or both.
Update: The technician looked at the car today. Drove it all morning he said and cant reproduce the issue. They had me go down to the dealership and drive with him. At first he was giving the whole "its supposed to make noise, there is a speaker" and I informed him that the vess is for alerting pedestrians and is not active past 20mph and that I had also disconnected it. Then he said that he cant hear it. I had to drive for about 5-7 miles before he started noticing what I kept pointing out. He said that he would be contacting the regional engineer but also that they would most likely want to fly out and drive it them selves. Sounds like a long process. I will update once i find out what they plan on doing (new motor order) or if they try to pass it off as functioning as designed.
Man, I am so sorry to hear of your grief. I have to commended you for your patience. I probably would have told Hyundai to take their car and go diddle themselves by this point. I hope they sort this out for you soon.
Update. Dealer called the engineer. They recommend changing the gear box again. So they gave the car back while they wait for the new gearbox to arrive. ETA is a month. I will try to get hyundai national to rush the part over. Wont be in contact with them until later this week.
I wish i could convince them to just skip the second gearbox and go right for the motor. They dont want to eat that $7k part cost though if they think $2k part will fix it..
I am curious if the new revision motor is showing up on the 2020s that hitting dealers now The new revised motor part number is 36500-OE 711 the old one was OE 710. You can apparently see the part number if you turn you front wheels hard left and look under the front passenger wheel on north american vehicles. I got this pic from a poster on a Kia niro EV forum
The Niro motors are different than the kona. Im not sure if anyone has documented the current motor model vs any of the new ones.
Looks like they they are exactly the same part numbers. https://www.hyundaipartsdeal.com/genuine/hyundai-traction-motor-assy~36500-0e700.html?Make=Hyundai&Model=Kona+Electric&Year=2019&Submodel=&Filter=()&Location=motor/traction_motor_gdu_assy,3736511,36500
The kona part number doesn't start at 710, it starts at 700. So unless its 3 revisions old, it may be a different model. I was also told (not verified by my self) that the gear ratio on the niro is different. https://www.oemhyundaiparts.com/oem-parts/hyundai-motor-assembly-365000e700?c=Zz1lbGVjdHJpY2FsJnM9ZWxlY3RyaWNhbC1jb21wb25lbnRzJmw9OSZuPUFzc2VtYmxpZXMgUGFnZSZhPWh5dW5kYWkmbz1rb25hLWVsZWN0cmljJnk9MjAxOSZ0PXVsdGltYXRlJmU9ZWxlY3RyaWM%3D
Right you are sir. I see from another Kona owner's thread they have replaced his Kona motor with a revised part number 36500-OE 701.
Here is currently what the car sounds like on the replacement gearbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ythgami9g3xf6i8/HyundaiKonaNoise_2ndGearboxReplacement.wav?dl=0 Can hear it quite clearly at 3min mark, 6 min mark. A few times its quite loud.
Quieter than your original post, but still there. Hope the new gearbox solves it once and for all. If not then its motor city, maybe copy the above repair report and supply it to the techs
Update. Hyundai National called. They want to buy the car back. The only hope I have is if I can convince the dealership to try and talk to the engineer about the possibility of going for the motor as a fix vs another gearbox so this car can be fixed quickly. Otherwise the car wont be fixed till FEB or later. Im estimating around january i'll have to make the decision to keep trying to fix the car or let hyundai buy it back (they said offer, so im assuming they will try to depreciate the cost from when I bought it...).
