A timetable to put a substantial number of BEVs and long-range PHEVs into production within 11 years (by 2030) is far, far too slow. By 2030, I think it's very likely that more than 50% of the new car market will be plug-in EVs, not merely "electrified" mild hybrids. Let's not forget that in New York City, the motorcar revolution took only about 13 years from start to finish -- that is, 13 years from almost no motor vehicles to almost no horse-drawn vehicles -- and these days the pace of change is faster. It's good that Toyota has decided to accelerate its plans a bit, but I think they are still mostly in denial-of-reality mode. It has been at most a very few months since Toyota's CEO repeated, in public, their astoundingly clueless assertion that there is no market for battery electric vehicles! Yup, them newfangled motorcars are just a passing fad. GET A HORSE!

Here is the kicker. Toyota is jointly developing a BEV platform with Suburu. So this platform will be there much earlier and if the market shifts considerably, Toyota has just to bring their marketing and manufacturing prowess and jump into the fray. Never underestimate Toyota, even though they are clearly late to the party.
