I figured I'd created a new thread for those of us in non-ZEV states to pool info on when/if the Kona electric will become available. I'll start by sharing my experience in Texas so far:

I have spoken to just about every dealer in my metro area, info was limited in early days and many salesman were misinformed or outright lied to me in the interest of making a sale. With a lot of persistence, I was able to get one dealer to reach out to the district manager. His reply:
The Kona electric will not be sold outside of ZEV states until Hyundai hits their 2.5% targets there.

This sounds suspiciously close to Hyundai's CARB obligations, making the Kona (at least for now) a compliance car.

A recent spin through the Kona EV configurator recently added to Hyundai's website only got me a misinformed sales pitch on a gas Kona and hybrids from yet another local dealer.

I would love to hear what else anybody has found out, any news you guys?

I spoke to my dealership in a suburb of Minneapolis and he basically said they don't expect to see one until Spring of 2020 at the earliest.

I'm only a few hundred miles from Canada, can I go up there and just buy one?!?

You'd get the heat pump that way, which would be handy in Minnesota. :)

But believe me, you don't want to go through the torturous process of importing a car, even if Hyundai Canada would give you the necessary certification that the car complies with U.S. regulations. The auto makers do all they can to prevent cross-border shopping.

Looks like Kona EV production was down the first two months of the year according to this article: https://insideevs.com/hyundai-reduce-kona-electric-production

This isn't a good sign for availability, hopefully the March numbers are better. I wish there was some way to determine how many are getting imported into the US

  7. Guess I,m lucky, seeing that steep drop off in production on Dec 18, (production date on mine Dec 22).
Must have been loaded next to last at the back the boat.
I think it's a combination of European( they seem to be waiting the longest but also have a large # of orders -Norway) orders on Kona as well supply from LG.
Lets hope production can be somewhat increased on both sides without sacrifice to quality.

  8. So I did a 10k tire rotation on my Kona the other week here in Las Vegas. After that I got an email to write a review about the service in which I wrote that the service was good but I can't have any ev related services get done because they are not trained on EVs.

I got a response that the foreman and a technician are currently in training for the EVs.

Not entirely sure what that means for future sales or at least services for our cars in non-zev states.

Since I will be scheduled for the water pump recall in a couple weeks (fingers crossed) I'll check in with them again about that and try to find out more ...

Washington state is a CARB state, but doesn't follow the ZEV part. I see the car is starting to show up in Seattle. They have been available in Vancouver, Wa for months now.

Nice. One of the issues I had with my old ICE car was that the nearest dealer was a 2-hour drive from here. There are a handful of other local dealers nearby - mostly Ford, but completely uninspiring (mostly trucks). But I am currently in Delaware, and this isn't a ZEV state, so no EV sales here. But Maryland does have them, and that is close enough.

There is a Delaware Hyundai dealer that is about 45 minutes away - I dropped in one day to ask what they could do on a Kona, and the answer was that they could work on anything not related to the powertrain. Which isn't bad, given the limited amount of service that is required on an EV. There is a Maryland dealer just over an hour away in a different direction - they actually sell Kona EV. If I had power train issues, I could go there. The dealer that I bought the car from is 2 hours away.

I wonder if the water pump recall applies to all Kona Electric. I have not received any recall notice. While I'm in a non ZEV state, my local Hyundai dealer can do warranty repairs as they are trained on the EV's..
However, no notice of any recalls yet and when I type my VIN on Hyundai's website to check for recalls, nothing comes up.

  13. My water pump recall did not show up either, they looked it up and for them it showed. Apparently not a high priority item.

Ditto. They said it was a "recall" (but no one has been recalled) rather than a TSB, which is normally for identifying problems that are to be addressed as needed. Anyway the parts have been on order for a few weeks.

  16. When I took mine in (equipped with the paperwork) they ordered one and it took about a week, but alas when I informed them there where 2 to be done, they reordered another can/case c/w o ring gasket and it took about a week. Considering the low cost, I believe they now stock several.
